LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week for the beginning of the spring 2019-20 season.
Texas Lutheran opened the spring portion of the season capturing victories over Louisiana College, LeTourneau and Centenary, with a lone loss to East Texas Baptist. The Bulldogs swept Louisiana Col-lege, 9-0, in their opener. Samantha Stafford at No. 1 singles, Mary Eby at No. 2 singles and Madison Starr each earned straight set victories. In doubles play TLU dropped just a combined four games in sweeping the three matches. The Bulldogs rallied after a loss to ETBU on Saturday, with Kaitlyn En-loe, Bailey Denton and Liz Perkins each earning straight set wins in singles play against LeTourneau. Stafford and Eby also collected straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles Sunday over Centenary.
Southwestern women’s tennis team opened its season 1-0 sweeping St. Thomas, 9-0. In singles, Mary Cardone finished 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot, with Esther Bowers finishing No. 2 in three sets, and Emma Kesterson giving up a single point, winning 6-1, 6-0 for the No. 3 spot. Head coach Billy Porter earned his 100th career coaching win with Saturday’s victory.
Schreiner also opened the 2020 season with a sweep of Howard Payne University, 9-0. Jennifer Garcia won in straight sets for the No. 1 spot with Kate del los Santos earning a 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Four other singles players finished in straight sets. The Mountaineer’s dropped just a com-bined four games in sweeping the three doubles matches.
St. Thomas played it first dual women’s tennis match in program history falling to East Texas Baptist, 7-2 on January 25. Ana Maria Gonzalez was the first to record a victory for the Celts defeating Ash-ley Schenck 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Trinity opened its 2020 season with two losses in January to NCAA Division I Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
