LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Colorado College picked up road wins over Sewanee and Berry and Southwestern snapped its losing streak to Birmingham-Southern, defeating the Panthers for the first time since 2014.
Makay Hansen struck for four goals in his collegiate debut and junior midfielder Conrad Song factored in four of Colorado College's first five goals of the second half as the Colorado College men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season with a 14-4 victory at Sewanee on Friday afternoon.
After the team's battled to a 3-3 tie during the first 30 minutes, Song put CC ahead to stay and ignited an 11-0 run when he struck for an unassisted goal 1:26 into the third quarter. The Tigers' defense held the host to only 12 shots during the final three quarters.
On Sunday at Berry College, CC struck for 11 consecutive goals to open the second half and rolled to an impressive 18-4 victory over the Vikings. This marks the first time the Tigers opened the season with a pair of road wins since 2017 when Colorado College defeated Transylvania University, 9-5, and Wittenberg University (12-10) in Nashville, Tenn.
For the second game in a row, Makay Hansen produced a game-high four goals to lead the Tigers. Max Rieser factored in five goals, scoring three and setting up two others, while Coby Petau and Elliot Nelson both finished with three tallies and an assist.
Southwestern defeated Birmingham-Southern College, 12-11, in a home match on Saturday at Varsity Field.
Nick Doxey finished with three goals on five shots for high scorer honors followed by Jacob Hamilton who scored two goals off six shots. Alex Melitz had nine saves on 20 shots on goal for the Pirates.
The Southwestern defense forced 22 turnovers.
The schedule is limited next week as Centenary travels to take on Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday and Southwestern plays host to Berry.
