LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Five SCAC women’s tennis teams were in action, with Austin College and Southwestern accounting for the league's three non-conference victories.
No. 22 Southwestern improved to 3-0 with a 9-0 victory over Concordia (Texas) on Thursday for its third consecutive shutout victory.
In doubles, Ether Bowers and Nina Mitrofanova defeated Isabella Wiik and Cassandra Landeros-Cabrera 8-1 in the No. 1 spot while Mary Cardone and Cecile Wilde swept Claire Austin and Kaitlin Stevens 8-0 in No. 2 doubles. Alli Ziehm and Sara Le closed out doubles with an 8-2 victory.
In singles, Cardone defeated Landeros-Cabrera with a pair of 6-1 sets while Mitrofanova bested Wiik 6-1, 6-0. Mariana Quetzeri swept Austin in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) and Taylor Despriet defeated Natalia Goodman 6-1, 6-0.
Meeshti Shethia won a hard-fought second set 6-3 after defeating Sweitzer 6-0 in the first, winning in the No. 5 spot. Chandler Vrba clinched the match with a straight set victory over Kaitlin Stevens.
Southwestern travels to California next week to face No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 22 and No. 1-ranked Caltech on Feb. 23.
Austin College improved to 2-1 on the season after victories over Concordia (Texas) and Texas Wesleyan. In Friday's 9-0 win against Concordia, Diana Carvajalino and Gigi Francis teamed up to take an 8-4 win on line one, while Georgia Moore and Katie Seibert took line two doubles by a score of 8-5. Melody Duong and Anna Sergiovanni wrapped things up with an 8-4 victory playing in the number three slot.
Carvajalino claimed the victory in line one singles as well, winning 6-3, 6-3, while Duong picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win at number two singles. Sergiovanni remained unbeaten on the year with an easy 6-0, 6-2 win at line three, and Moore took a 6-3, 6-1 victory playing number four singles. Seibert and Francis wrapped up the clean sweep at lines five and six, respectively, with Seibert winning 6-2, 6-3 and Francis earning a 6-1, 6-4 win.
