LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary and Southwestern remained unbeaten following another excited week of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer as designated non-conference games continued among SCAC squads.
Centenary is out to its second-straight 5-0 start to open a season after a midweek home opening victory against LeTourneau, 2-1, on Wednesday and securing a road victory over Johnson & Wales (2-4), 4-1, on Sunday. Senior Kyra Montes scored in both games, including the game-winner against LeTourneau in the 82nd minute, a contest the Ladies fell behind early but battled to earn the late win. Montes has now scored in three consecutive games.
Southwestern has opened the 2019 season 5-0, the best start for the Pirates in the SCAC era that dates back to the 1994 campaign. Last week Southwestern posted impressive shutout victories against Howard Payne, 1-0, and Texas Lutheran, 3-0. Senior Romie Reyna scored the lone goal in the win over the Yellow Jackets and freshman Alexis Guajardo registered her first points of her career finding the back of the net twice against TLU. The Pirates have allowed just one goal this year in over 445 minutes of action and going back to last season have now posted shutouts in seven of their last nine matches.
Trinity (4-1) dropped its first contest of the year, 1-0, on the road against Puget Sound last Friday but bounced back to earn a convincing 3-0 victory over Willamette to close out its west coast trip on Sunday. Freshman Jessica Young picked up her first career goal and first career game-winner, breaking the scoreless tie with a header in the 28th minute.
Texas Lutheran (3-1-1) responded from its first loss of the season to Southwestern by defeating Huston-Tillotson, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon. Despite giving up the tying goal in the 90th minute, the Bulldogs kept their composure and put the game away in the less than four minutes into the overtime period when junior Raquel Morris scored her second game-winning goal of the season.
Schreiner (3-2-2) was busy last week, posting a 2-0-1 record with a pair of 2-1 wins on the road against Concordia (Tex.) and Mary Hardin-Baylor before returning home for a scoreless draw against Sul Ross St on Sunday. Senior midfielder Dani Loeblein was outstanding, scoring all four goals for the Mountaineers to lift her total for the season to six, which currently leads the SCAC.
Dallas (1-2-1) collected its first win of the year after the Crusaders defeated Austin College, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in Sherman. Freshman Alyssa Mencacci found the back of the net in the 57th minute for the first time in her career for the game-winner. Mencacci scored her second career goal the following game in a 1-1 tie against McMurry to close out the week on Sunday.
St. Thomas (1-3-1) earned its first win of the season, going on the road and knocking off JWU, 2-0, on Sunday. The Celts all-time leading goal scorer, senior Katarina Maksimov and freshman Rachel Bejarano each scored in the win.
SCAC Women’s Soccer continues this week with a couple of midweek contests before a weekend full of designated non-conference conference matches scheduled on Friday and Sunday.
