HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas closed the home portion of their 2019 schedule Sunday with a 1-1, double-overtime draw with Texas Lutheran.
The Celts (4-8-2, 1-5-1 SCAC) snapped a five-match losing streak with the draw and partially avenged a season-opening, 1-0 loss at Texas Lutheran.
After a scoreless first half, the Celts struck first shortly before the hour mark when Aeriana Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) knocked home a 30-yard free kick past TLU goalkeeper Madison Stout in the 59th minute. It was the second goal of the season for the UST sophomore.
The visiting Bulldogs tied the match when Madison Alexander redirected a free kick that was blocked by UST goalkeeper Jordan Thompson (SR/Spring, Texas) in the 73rd minute.
Both teams had plenty of chances for more goals in regulation and overtime. Thompson made a total of eight saves in the match, including two in the second overtime period.
The Celts close out the season Tuesday when they visit Austin College to make up a contest that was rained out Oct. 25. The match has postseason implications for Austin College in advance of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
