Haugland Delivers Hat Trick in Crusaders 4-1 Win Over Schreiner
IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's soccer team defeated Schreiner University 4-1 on Friday evening. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) paced Dallas with an early lead after he scored 2:46 into the game. Haugland later found two more goals to complete the hat trick (first since Colton Allen in 2015 at Centenary College) as UD was able to get back to .500 on the early campaign. The Crusaders (2-2) outshot the Mountaineers 16-10, while 10 of the Dallas shots were put on frame.
Following the Haugland goal, Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) joined in on the offensive attack as he was able to find the back of the net for his third goal on the season. In the 21st minute Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) fed him the ball on a breakaway while Reynolds was able to beat the keeper to the lower right post. Haugland then put Dallas up 3-0 (38:02) with the assist coming from Jake Buete (Southlake, Texas). Buete gathered his first career point with that dish.
In the 41st minute Schriener (1-5-1) was able to get on the board. A foul in the box gave Allan Rayo a penalty kick. He converted the attempt by beating the Dallas keeper left. This 3-1 score would hold up heading into the halftime break. UD fired 12 shots in the half.
The second half consisted of only 10 combined shots, with six coming from the visiting team. Haugland was not done yet as he beat the keeper once again in the 88th minute for his first career hat trick. Cody Briggs grabbed his first assist on the season on the scoring play after his deep ball from midfield into the box found the foot of Haugland. Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) played the final 45 minutes in goal for Dallas as he made his season debut under the lights. Carlin swallowed up all of the Schreiner attempts to complete the clean sheet.
Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) and Haugland both took four shots, while placing three on goal to lead Dallas. Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas) also placed three shots on goal as Dallas challenged the Schreiner goalie all night long. Caleb Strange (Argyle, Texas) played the first half, only allowing the PK. Carlin totaled three saves on three opportunities in the second half. Dallas won the corner kicks battle 8-2.
Four different Mountaineers took multiple shots, but only four of them made it on frame. Cody Smith played all 90 minutes for SU in goal as he notched six saves on 10 tries.
Coach David Hoffmann collected his 150th career win with the win. Hoffmann, who ranks atop the program for all-time victories, is now 150-122-21 all-time as the Dallas coach.
