Women's Soccer Continues Winning Streak

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Tacking another win to the 2019 season, the Southwestern University women's soccer team defeated the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets 1-0 this Tuesday afternoon.

In the first half, the Pirates moved fast in attacking the Yellow Jacket goal, taking six shots within the first nine minutes. However, HPU's goalie Delaney Castor held the Pirates 0-0 in the first half by saving seven of the 11 shots taken on goal. HPU took seven shots at Southwestern's box, but the ball rarely reached Southwestern's goalie Mary Cardone, who saved two of the seven shots HPU took.

Though Southwestern came up scoreless in the first half, that didn't stop the Pirates from coming back and attacking the Yellow Jacket goal again starting the second half. Juliana Chapa took the first shot of the half which was saved by Castor, however, freshman Karlee Holmes fought to become the Pirate to blow the ball past Castor,  giving the Pirates the 1-0 lead over HPU. With the rest of the second half to play, the Pirates defense held the Yellow Jackets scoreless to add the fourth consecutive win of the season for the Pirates.

Holmes earned her first career goal while Cardone had six saves for the Pirates. HPU's goalkeeper, Castor, also had an impressive game with 15 saves.

Up next, the Pirates take on a fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference ( SCAC) team, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, this Friday, September 13. The game will take place on Varsity Field at 6:00 p.m.
