Dominant Second Half Powers CC Past Sewanee

Makay Hansen struck for four goals in his collegiate debut and junior midfielder Conrad Song factored in four of Colorado College's first five goals of the second half as the CC men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season with a 14-4 victory at Sewanee on Friday afternoon.

After the team's battled to a 3-3 tie during the first 30 minutes, Song put CC ahead to stay and ignited an 11-0 run when he struck for an unassisted goal 1:26 into the third quarter.

A little more than two minutes later, he set up a score by Dylan Wells to give Colorado College its first two-goal lead of the game.

After Brooks Brown gave CC a 6-3 cushion, Song assisted on tallies by Coby Petau and Wells, both of whom finished with three goals.

Colorado College added three more scores during the final two minutes of the third quarter, including the second of the game by Hansen with one second to play.

Hansen struck for his third of the game 13 seconds into the fourth quarter and completed the natural hat trick with a man-up goal with 10:02 remaining.

Hansen gave CC a 3-2 lead when he struck for a man-up goal with 3:16 remaining in the first half off of a feed from Elliot Nelson, but Kip McGuire tied the score at 3-3 when he found the net with 1:47 left before halftime.

Sewanee scored 2:27 into the game on a goal by Thomas Oliver and doubled its lead with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter on an unassisted tally by Daniel Burnum.

Wells put the Tigers on the board with his first collegiate goal with 1:36 to play in the first quarter, and CC leveled the score at 2-2 on a score by Max Rieser a little less than two minutes into the second frame.

Andrew Harwood made six of his 10 saves during the first quarter when Sewanee launched 14 shots.

Thanks in part to a fierce effort by the Colorado College defense, the hosts had only 12 shots during the final three quarters.

Coach's Comments
"It was a great revenge win today," head coach Sean Woods said. "Harwood really bailed us out in the first quarter, then our defense settled in. It took our offense until the third quarter to settle down ... lots of nerves from our younger guys. But when we settled in on offense, they played great Tiger lacrosse. Winston Chodnicki and our wing play was fantastic all day. It was a great team win."

Colorado College Standouts
John Lawrence produced a game-high seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Winston Chodnicki won 13 of 19 faceoffs and had three ground balls.
