Dallas Weathers the Storm; Defeats Trinity 82-76 in OT Thriller

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team weathered the storm through a tornado warning delay and the Tigers of Trinity University by winning an overtime thriller at the Maher Center 82-76. The Crusaders (7-5, 3-2 SCAC) have now won three-straight conference games to start 2020 and grab its first win at home since November 16th. Trinity (4-8, 2-3 SCAC) went up by a point (68-67) after Jordan Lippman hit a trey with 48 seconds left on regulation. Jai Love (St. Louis, Mo.) later got fouled with 16 seconds remaining, as he was able to go 1-1 from the line to allow Trinity one last heave, but to no avail. In overtime, TU grabbed a 74-71 lead after a David Nickell dunk. The Dallas defense down the stretch and held tough as UD was able to grab the lead and add to it as they finished the game on an 11-2 run in the final 3:23 minutes of overtime.

Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) opened the game with a three-pointer. Trinity answered with five straight points. Letrell Toussaint (Waco, Texas) later tied it up 5-5 with his jumper. The Tigers then went on a 7-0 run at this point to go up 12-5. Dallas then found some rhythm on the offensive court as Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas) capped off a 6-0 run with his lay-in to get within one point (12-11).

Matt Holloway (Melissa, Texas) was able to tie up the game at 13 at the 11:59 mark. The Tigers then would go up by as many as four points, but UD was able to hang with them and come back to tie the game once again at 24 thanks to a tough jumper made by Isaiah Hayes (Arlington, Texas). Wambsganss finally put UD back on top after his steal and layup put Dallas up 28-26. UD made big free throws at the end of the half to take a 32-31 lead into the break.

At the half Wambsganss led Dallas with eight points, making two three-pointers, as Hyde had seven points at the break. Jordan Lippmann led the Tigers with seven points. As halftime winded down, the teams were forced to stay in their locker rooms as a Tornado warning came about in the area. After about a 20 minute delay, the two teams came back out for the second half of play.

UD took advantage of the delay and came out fired up as they raced out to a 9-2 run as Dallas went up 46-37. At the 14:13 mark, TU went on a 5-0 run to pull within 46-42. Hyde put the Crusaders up by 10 at the 12:58 mark and looked to extend its lead at this moment. Trinity then went on a terror to gain back the momentum. The Tigers found a 9-0 run to get within a point with eight minutes to play.  A minute later, TU tied the game up at 54. Jacob Giunta (Keller, Texas) and Hyde both hit treys to hold with the tough Tigers.

Ben Canady put the Tigers up 63-62 with two minutes to play. Mathis hit a big three-pointer to go along with a 5-0 Dallas run to put UD up 67-63. TU then grabbed a 5-0 run of its own to go up 68-67 with 48 seconds to play. UD had a chance late after a foul led Love to the foul line. Love went 1-1 to tie up the game, but gave Trinity a last second heave, but it missed to send the two teams to overtime. In overtime, Trinity took first blood as they grabbed the first bucket. Love then hit three. TU had a dunk from Nickell to put the Tigers up 74-71. Hyde later hit a big trey with two minutes to play to give Dallas back the lead. Luke Stuart hit his jumper to get Trinity within a point at the 1:45. Love then sealed the game making three free throws down the stretch to give Dallas the conference win.

Hyde paced Dallas on a career night notching a personal-best 23 points, finishing 5-8 from behind the arc and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Hyde also swatted three balls on the evening.  Love added 16 points with an 8-10 effort from the charity stripe. Mathis also hit double-digits for the Crusaders with 11 points. UD made 18 of 22 shots at the charity stripe and finished 26-64 (40.6%) from the field.
