LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas extended its winning streak to four matches thanks to a 4-1 week during the week of Oct. 8-14. The Crusaders dropped a 3-1 decision to Southwestern Assemblies of God before finishing with four wins at home.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College (16-10, 2-4 SCAC) went 4-1 last week, topping Bacone, Southwestern Christian and Central (Iowa) all by scores of 3-0 before falling 3-2 to Our Lady of the Lake. The ’Roos then finished the week with a 3-1 win over Bethel (Minn.). Austin College returns to action on Oct. 16 when the ‘Roos travel to Texas-Dallas. Austin College will then finish off the conference portion of its schedule Oct. 20-21 when it competes in the final SCAC Divisional at Trinity.
Centenary (1-20, 0-6) snapped their 20-match
losing streak (dating back to last season) with a 3-0 sweep over
Rust College before falling to UT Tyler for the second time this
year. The Ladies dominated Rust (25-15, 25-22, 25-17) before
playing the Patriots much more competitively compared to their
initial meeting earlier this season. The Ladies averaged only 10
points per set in their first match Sept. 8, but nearly escaped
with a win Thursday, (25-23, 25-23, 25-21). Centenary wraps up its
home slate Oct. 18, hosting Millsaps College and Southern Arkansas
in its final tri-match.
No. 18 Colorado College went a perfect 3-0 over the
weekend as it hosted three schools during non-conference action.
The Tigers began the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Claremont
Colleges and finished the weekend with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over
Baker University and Whittier College to improve to 18-6 this
season. Seniors Laura Goldsmith and Kate Squires led the team over
the weekend as they were both honored during senior night on
Friday. Goldsmith led the team with 62 digs, 40 kills and four
service aces, while Squires led the team with 111 assists over the
weekend. Sophomore Kristen Liberty led the team defensively at the
net with 11 blocks. CC returns to the road as it takes on Division
II Colorado Christian University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Tigers
finish the week resuming SCAC action with four matches over
Saturday and Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
Dallas (17-11, 2-4 SCAC) went 4-1 on the week, winning
all matches played in the Dallas Fall Break Classic at the Maher
Athletic Center. Tuesday brought Southwestern Assemblies of God
University to Irving, Texas, where the Crusaders fell 3-1 on
'Senior Day' to the Lions. Dallas hosted four teams in the Fall
Break Classic on Friday and Saturday. The first day of round-robin
play saw the Crusaders capture a 3-1 victory over Providence
College (Canada) prior to dismissing Johnson & Wales University
(Colo.) 3-1 in the night cap. It was more of the same for Dallas on
Saturday, as the team defeated Lyon College 3-1 before knocking off
Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) 3-2. This week, Dallas
returns to SCAC-play over the weekend, playing four matches at
Trinity -- Trinity and Austin College (Saturday), Colorado College
and Southwestern (Sunday).
No. 22 Southwestern upped their game and didn't drop a
set in their three wins but fell to #5 Christopher Newport over the
weekend to move to 17-7 on the season. The Pirates charged out of
the gates in their first match, facing Tufts. SU posted a .216
hitting percentage and crushed Tufts 25-10 in the opening set.
Tufts bounced back to challenge Southwestern, but the Pirates were
too hot to handle as they closed out the match with a 25-19 set two
win and 25-22 set three win. CNU was on fire offensively with a
.387 attack percentage in set one, winning 25-15. SU would not go
away and fought back hard, narrowly dropping the second set 23-25
before turning the tables and winning 25-23 in the third set.
Christopher Newport matched their first set effort in the fourth,
however, and again hit .387 to win 25-11. On day two Southwestern
couldn't be stopped as they easily won 3-0, 3-0 over Endicott and
UMass-Boston. the Pirates return to SCAC conference action in San
Antonio this weekend. They open with Centenary College on Saturday
afternoon.
Trinity won the Trinity Fall Classic over the
weekend, defeating Our Lady of the Lake and Bethel University, and
going 2-1 overall at the tournament. The Tigers won the first two
matches of the tournament to take the lead after day one, sweeping
both OLLU and Bethel. Trinity then had a rematch with OLLU on the
second day, but couldn’t manage a third win this season over
the Saints, falling 3-2. Trinity will compete in the SCAC
Divisional this weekend, playing host to its fellow conference
schools for a two-day tournament. The Tigers are currently third in
the SCAC with a record of 4-2.
