Men's Soccer Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University improved to 3-2 on the season thanks to two wins during the week. The Pirates started the week off with a 2-0 win over Hardin-Simmons. Southwestern then wrapped up the week with a 3-2 overtime victory over Texas-Dallas.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 2-0-1 last week to improve to 2-1-1 overall this season, tying with Howard Payne 1-1 to start the week before winning both of their games this weekend, including a 1-0 win over LeTourneau and a 5-3 victory over East Texas Baptist. Caleb Sherer scored the lone goal against both Howard Payne and LeTourneau, while Memo Allande had a hat trick in the victory over ETBU. In that game the ‘Roos fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute before scoring four times in an 11 minute span to head into halftime leading 4-2. Andy Johnson and Taylor Greenwalt also scored in the game, while Andrew Parides, Daniel Graham, Sherer, Derek Crocker and Roberto Varela all picked up assists during the week. This weekend the ‘Roos hit the road to take on Greenville College and Westminster College.

Centenary
went 0-2 on the week dropping a 1-0 decision to Texas Lutheran and a 2-1 decision to Howard Payne on Sept. 3rd and 8th, respectively. Against, Howard Payne, the Gents’ Adam Ghaemmaghami split HPU’s lead in half in the 62nd minute after taking a few dribbles, firing a 30-yard shot in the top right of the net over the diving goalie's hands. Centenary returns to action on Sept. 11th when they travel to LeTourneau for a 7 p.m. contest.

Senior forwards Daniel Wright and Matt Fechter struck in a span of 6:04 early in the second half and the defense turned in a dominating effort to lead Colorado College a 2-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday. Wright broke a scoreless tie in the 49th minute when he blocked a clearing attempt by the NWU goalkeeper. The Tigers doubled their lead a little more than six minutes later when Matt Fechter chased down a long pass from junior forward Sean Parham/co-captain on the left side, moved around the defense and threaded a shot between the keeper and the left post. CC had to wait out three lightning delays totaling 107 minutes before putting the finishing touches on their first shutout of the season. Senior defender Nick Lammers scored his first goal of the season with four minutes remaining in the game, but Colorado College was not able to notch the equalizer and dropped a 2-1 decision at Division II CU-Colorado Springs. The Tigers scored four goals in the final three and a half minutes during a 6-0 victory over George Fox University on Saturday. The six goals were the most for since a 6-1 victory over Oglethorpe University on Oct. 18, 2009. Fechter, junior Sean Parham and freshman Ryan Huettel each scored twice in the triumph, while senior keepers Brian Graf and Forrest Marowitz combined for the team's second shutout of the season. One day after scoring a season-high six goals, CC was unable to find the net and dropped a 1-0 decision in a defensive battle at the University of Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon. Colorado College returns home next weekend for the 2012 Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament. The Tigers play host to Fredonia State University on Friday and Otterbein University on Sunday.

Dallas (2-1) went 1-0 on the week, topping Schreiner, 2-0, in Saturday's home-opener. Sophomore defender James Bernard broke a scoreless tie in the 14 minute, netting his first goal of the season from an assist by sophomore midfielder Aaron Hegemann. Insurance was provided in the 54th minute, when freshman midfielder Colton Allen crossed a ball that was kicked in by a Schreiner defender for an own goal. The two-goal cushion was more than enough for senior goalkeeper James Kerin, who recorded his second shutout of the season. Kerin finished with six saves from 13 Schreiner shots, while Dallas garnered five shots on goal from 10 attempts. On tap this week for Dallas is a home contest versus Millsaps at 11 a.m.

Southwestern
hit its stride this week, winning two games in San Antonio to move to 3-2 on the season. Friday night SU took on Hardin-Simmons University and used two goals by Steven Resnik, assisted by Timothy Eamma, for a 2-0 shutout victory. Saturday, the Pirates once again needed overtime to settle the score, but this time came out the victors. Ryan Staten was unstoppable offensively as he posted two goals, including the game winner in overtime, and one assist to hand Southwestern a 3-2 win. They return home to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night before heading to California to face Whittier and Redlands over the weekend.

No. 1 Trinity remained undefeated with three victories over the past week. The Tigers opened the week with a 3-2 overtime win against Willamette on Monday afternoon.  Over the weekend, Trinity scored a pair of shutouts against UT-Dallas and Hardin-Simmons. On Monday, Trinity held a slim 1-0 lead most of the game, but Willamette tied it midway through the second half. The visitors then scored again to take the lead against the top-ranked Tigers with just 10:10 remaining in regulation. Trinity answered immediately, however, scoring the tying goal just 33 seconds later to force overtime. In the seventh minute of overtime, Brian Hines scored his second goal of the day to send the Tigers to victory. Over the weekend, Trinity avenged two tie games from last season with a pair of wins. The Tigers blanked UT-Dallas 2-0 on Friday, followed by a 4-0 win over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday night. Trinity will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, facing off against Redlands and Claremont.  The Tigers defeated Redlands 4-1 in San Antonio last season, but have not faced Claremont since the 2003 season.  Trinity won 6-0 in that meeting, which was also in San Antonio.
