Trinity Men & Women In The Lead After Second Day of SCAC Championships

ROCKWALL, Texas - Trinity University's men's and women's teams find themselves leading after the second day of the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving championships at the Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center. Results | Team Scores | Official Site

Both Trinity Tiger teams lead over Colorado College in second place. The Trinity women lead by more than 150 points with a total score of 422.5 after the first full day of both swimming and diving events. Trinity's men scored 327.5 points to 263.5 points for Colorado College.

The Tiger women won four of five swimming events in today's action, which includes both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay. Trinity's men also won the 200 free relay to start the evening session, then went on to post five more All-SCAC performances.

In women's diving, Trinity senior Ruth Hahn won the 1-meter event with a record-breaking score of 512.15, and was joined by All-SCAC performers Ashley Heline and Katie Sheldon.

Trinity's Jennifer Ince, Mary Price, Christine Hoelterhoff, and Ana Price combined for the women's championship 200 free relay in the opening event. Both Ana and Mary Price also raced to a championship as part of the 400 medley relay, combining with Lydia Jones and Kelly Holton. 

Melanie Gustafson and Kara Beauchamp also won individual events on the women's side. Gustafson won the 500 free with a time of 5:00.14, earning a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Beauchamp did the same with a win in the 200 individual medley. Jones and Leah Selznick finished second and third in the 500 free, and Jones also earned a 'B' cut time of 5:02.72 in the race.

Junior Brenna Day won the women's 50-yard freestyle and was part of a record-setting effort in the 400 medley relay as Colorado College clawed its way into second place after the first full day of the 2013 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Day gave Colorado College its first championship on the women's side, winning the 50 free in 24.30. She beat Trinity's Jennifer Ince to the wall by .09.

Competing in its first-ever SCAC championship, the Centenary College Ladies find themselves in third place after strong performances from Rachel Olson and Hayley Schneider. The duo claimed second and third respectively in the women’s 200 individual medley relay. Olson recorded a time of 2:09.71 with Schneider posting a time of 2:09.98.

Olson and Schneider teamed up with Kathlyn Rivers and Laura Huning for a third place finish in the women’s 400 medley relay with a time of 4:00.91. Huning, Olson joineded with Michelle Gaubert and Daniela Ruelas in the 200 free relay to finished second with a time of 1:39.18.

In men's action, Trinity's Adam Thomas, Stephen Culberson, Spencer Bard, and Jon Hoffman raced to the finish in 1:23.18 to win the men's 200 free relay.  

Trinity's Andrew Thiesse and Arthurd Daigh finished second and third in the 500 free to earn All-SCAC honors, while Will Clinton was third in the 200 IM. Culberston, T.J. Jones, Bard, and Thomas combined for a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay to notch another All-SCAC performance.

Colorado College freshman Colin Chupik finished fourth in the 50 free and swam legs on CC's teams that finished third in the 400 medley relay and fourth in the 200 free relay. Senior Flynn McGuire took eighth in the 50 free and also was part of both relay squads.

In the closest race of the night, Chupik claimed fourth in the 50 free with a season-best effort of 21.35. He was only .35 seconds off the winning time of 21.00 set by Centenary's Austin Butler. McGuire was close behind in 21.49.

Southwestern University was paced by freshman Tommy Frashier's win in  the 500 free. He won his and the school's first-ever SCAC individual championship by touching the wall in 4:39.97, just 1.48 seconds ahead the second-place finisher. The Pirate men totaled 215 points and are 12 points ahead of fourth-place Centenary.

The Gents were paced by SCAC individual champions Ross Olivier and Austin Butler. Olivier won the program's first-ever SCAC individual championship with his win in the 200 IM. Olivier clocked a 1:55.49. Then, in the very next event Butler won the Gents' second consecutive SCAC individual title with his win in the 50 free by touching the wall in 21.00 seconds.

Centenary then finished the night in exciting fashion as the quartet of Michael Schwandt, Butler, Olivier and Andrew Borel recorded the second fastest time in SCAC Championship history with a time of 3:26.06 to claim the crown.
