Austin College fell 1-0 in their season opener
last week against the University of Texas-Dallas, with UTD scoring
on a penalty kick in the 51st minute of action to hand the 'Roos
the defeat. Austin College had a chance to square things up less
than a minute later on a penalty kick of their own, but the UTD
keeper made a save to keep the 'Roos scoreless. Emily Brockette
made 10 saves in the net for Austin College, which takes on
LeTourneau on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and East Texas Baptist at 12:00
p.m. on Sunday.
Centenary opened its first year as a
member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 1-1
draw on Sept. 1 against Schreiner University. Carly Slovensky tied
the game with a goal in the 33rd minute. The Ladies return to
action on Sept. 9 when they host Millsaps at Mayo
Field.
Dallas (2-0) kicks-off the 2012 campaign with five road
games. Over the weekend, the Lady Crusaders handled business over
their first two opponents. On Saturday in Austin, Texas, Dallas won
2-0 over Concordia University, behind two goals from senior
midfielder Marin Chambers (Anchorage, Alaska). Senior goalkeeper
Brigid Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) registered the shutout in making seven
saves from 14 shots. Sunday brought the Lady Crusaders to
Brownwood, Texas, for a match with Howard Payne University. The
Lady Yellow Jackets took a commanding 2-0 lead at the 47:39 mark
with a converted penalty kick. A resilient Dallas squad, however,
responded with three unanswered goals to remain unscathed. In the
3-2 victory, Claire Sexton (Salem, Va.), Nicole Johnson (Houston,
Texas) and Michelle Carpenter (Sugar Land, Texas) all tallied a
score for Dallas. Hasson made one save from 11 overall
shots.
Southwestern faced some tough competition to kick-off the
2012 season and dropped both games to start the year 0-2. Friday,
Southwestern traveled to Abilene, Texas to face nationally-ranked
Hardin-Simmons University. HSU started out strong and kept the
Pirates from getting anything going offensively as they fell 6-0.
Saturday, SU's defense was much tougher but they were still unable
to get their offense jump started as they were once again shutout,
this time 1-0. The Pirates search for their first win of the season
on Tuesday night as they host Concordia University (TX) in their
home opener at 7pm before heading back out on the road to take on
UT Dallas on Friday and UT Tyler on Sunday.
No. 6 Trinity survived a tough weekend on the road,
picking up a win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and
tying 10th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University. The Tigers opened the
season with a 3-0 shutout on Friday night against UMHB. Kelsey
Falcone scored a pair of goals to lead the team to victory, and
goalkeeper Katie Garrett picked up a pair of saves in posting her
25th career shutout. In Saturday's annual showdown between Trinity
and Hardin-Simmons, the Tigers bounced back after allowing an early
goal to the Cowgirls – tying the game in the 62nd minute on
another goal by Falcone. She scored just one goal last
season, but has already netted three in the first two games of
2012. This weekend, Trinity continues its string of road games to
start the season. The Tigers travel to the University of
Texas-Tyler on Friday, followed by a Sunday afternoon game at the
University of Texas-Dallas. Trinity shut out both teams in San
Antonio last season.
