LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University extended its winning streak to four games thanks to a perfect 4-0 week during the week of March 11-17. The four wins included a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference three game sweep of the University of Dallas. Trinity is 8-2 in its past 10 games.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 2-3 last week with a pair
of dramatic walk-off victories over East Texas Baptist and
Centenary. The ‘Roos are now 8-19 overall and have won five
of their last eight games. Against ETBU, the ‘Roos fell 4-0
before coming away with a 10-9, come from behind, extra innings
victory with Dylan Day providing a walk off RBI single. Against
Centenary, the ‘Roos fell 10-1 in game one before Josh
Coughennower drew a bases loaded walk to give the ‘Roos their
second walk off victory, winning 6-5 over the Gents. The
‘Roos fell 10-7 in their final game against Centenary on
Sunday. Shane Williams batted .500 with a double and Coughennower
finished the week hitting .455 with two doubles and four RBI, while
Mason Leech hit .333 and drove in six runs. Tyler Appelquist stole
two bases, upping his season total to 11, and Colt Herron belted
his third homer of the season in the final game against Centenary.
Herron and Blaine Tew each earned a win in relief during the
week.
Centenary picked up its fourth straight SCAC series with a
10-7 win over Austin College on Sunday en route to a 3-1 mark on
the week. The Gents have claimed each series in the first round of
conference play en route to a 15-5 record and 9-3 in league play.
The Gents opened the week with a 16-6 victory over LeTourneau
before splitting a Saturday twin bill with AC. Tyler Clakley in 17
plate appearance pounded out a team-best nine hits on the week and
tied for the top spot on the squad with six RBI. Of his nine hits,
the senior from Tyler, Texas racked up a homerun and triple.
Clakley tallied at least one hit in all three outings against the
Roos and drove in four of his six runs during the span. On the
mound, a pair of Gents logged complete-game wins. Layton Tromba and
Cole Thompson each went the distance for the Maroon and White
against AC. Thompson led the hurlers with 10 strikeouts while
Tromba garnered a 1.29 ERA – the lowest of any pitcher that
tossed more than two innings on the week. Tromba surrendered just
six hits in the outing and one run. The complete-game victory for
Tromba marked the fifth on the season which leads the
conference.
Dallas (11-14, 6-6 SCAC) went 1-4 on the week. The
Crusaders won 8-7 before falling 4-3 in game two of Tuesday's
doubleheader versus Concordia University in Austin, Texas. Freshman
left-handed pitcher Kurt Doerries (1-1) was the winning pitcher of
record in game one. No. 7 ranked Trinity University trekked to
Irving, Texas, for a three-game weekend series. Dallas was bested
3-1 and 10-2 on Saturday before falling 7-5 Sunday. Head coach
Fraser Holmes' squad looks to rebound this week, as the Crusaders
host Nebraska Wesleyan University (Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.) and
conference foe Austin College (Saturday, 2 p.m.; Sunday, 2
p.m.).
Southwestern went 0-4 this week playing a midweek
non-conference game against Howard Payne (L 7-5 in 10) before
dropping all three games to Sul Ross State in a weekend
non-conference series. The Pirates are now 2-23 overall and 0-12 in
SCAC play. Southwestern returns to action on March 19 when the
Pirates travel to Texas Lutheran in non-conference action before
hosting conference foe Centenary in a three-game series over the
weekend.
No. 7 Trinity finished off a 4-0 week with a three-game
SCAC road sweep at the University of Dallas over the weekend. The
Tigers defeated future SCAC member Texas Lutheran 8-6 to start the
week. The weekend series opened with a Saturday doubleheader, with
the Tigers taking games 3-1 and 10-2. In the series finale, Trinity
held on for a 7-5 win over the Crusaders. Trinity has won 13 of its
last 15 games and stands 19-4 overall. The Tigers are tied atop the
SCAC standings with a 9-3 record this season. The Tigers open up a
nine-game home stand this week, playing five non-conference games
in a span of six days. Trinity opens the week with a Tuesday
night game against Mary Hardin-Baylor, then will host Rockford
(Ill.) for a four-game weekend series beginning on Friday night.
Trinity swept two games from UMHB last season, winning 5-3 and
9-3.
