Baseball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College tallied a perfect 3-0 week, highlighted by two wins over No. 2/3 Trinity University. Earlier in the season, the Gents took two of three from Trinity and won the regular season series with a 4-1 record against the Tigers.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 2-1 last week, splitting a doubleheader with Howard Payne before picking up a win over Southwestern over the weekend. The ‘Roos fell 4-2 to HPU in their first game before earning a 16-15 win in game two with Austin Vaughan going 2-for-3 with four runs scored, a home run, and two RBI and Josh Coughennower going 4-for-4 with two runs, a double, a stolen base, and three RBI. The ‘Roos then topped Southwestern 3-2 on Friday behind a strong pitching performance from Todd Takabuki, who went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Colt Herron earned saves in both of the victories.

Centenary
scored a perfect 3-0 week on the season. The Gents posted a midweek decision over LeTourneau at Shehee Stadium and followed it with a pair of victories over nationally-ranked Trinity. The wins at TU marked the third straight over the conference’s favorite. Craig Littleman paced the Maroon and White at the dish with a .400 batting average while Jemari James led the team with five hits and five RBI. On the mound, Layton Tromba and Holden Novak provided solid starts holding the opposition to just two, combined earned runs through 16 innings. Tromba logged his sixth, complete game effort of the season with a 3-1 victory at Trinity. Novak tossed seven innings against LETU in his third win of the season.

Dallas
(14-17, 8-6 SCAC) went 1-2 on the week. The Crusaders fell 5-0 at the University of Texas-Tyler on Tuesday. Head coach Fraser Holmes' squad proceeded to split (W, 2-1; L, 6-5) with Dallas Christian College at neutral site Gabe Nesbitt Field on Thursday evening in McKinney, Texas. Junior right-hander Andrew Bossert (5-2) was the winning pitcher of record in game one. Dallas will travel to Georgetown, Texas, this week to battle Southwestern University -- (Saturday, 2 PM 1x7; Sunday, 1 p.m. 1x9).

Southwestern
went 0-1 this week dropping a game to SCAC foe Austin College, 3-2, on March 29. Centerfielder Cruz Luna was 2-4 with one RBI and  two doubles. Cody Lovas took the loss in relief. The Pirates are now 2-27 and 0-15 in SCAC play. Southwestern returns to action on April 1 when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 p.m. before continuing SCAC play with single games against Dallas on April 6-7.

No. 3 Trinity
was just 1-2 over the past week, defeating Concordia (Texas) 8-2, but losing 3-1 and 14-12 (11 innings) in a two-game SCAC series to Centenary. Trinity is now 24-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play, which is currently second in the standings. In the series finale with the Gents, the Tigers rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the ninth, but left the bases loaded to force extra innings. Centenary went on to win it in the 11th to finish with four wins in five games against Trinity this season. Christian Muscarello tied a school record with six hits in the extra-inning game against Centenary, becoming the fourth Tiger player to do so. With that, he is also now in the top 15 in school history with 172 career hits with Trinity. Trinity will finish off a nine-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon against Hardin-Simmons University. The Tigers resume SCAC play on Saturday and Sunday, facing Austin College in a two-game series in Sherman, Texas.
