SHERMAN, Texas - For the second year in a row, the Austin College women’s soccer team and Alphi Phi Omega have been working with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Give Cancer the Boot.,
Give Cancer the Boot is a program dedicated to raising awareness as well as money for cancer research to be donated in the name of Oklahoma University offensive lineman Austin Woods, who will be present at Sunday’s game.
This year the Give Cancer the Boot game will be this Sunday, October 28 in the team’s home finale against East Central Oklahoma University. Throughout this past week the ‘Roos and Alpha Phi Omega have been selling Give Cancer the Boot t-shirts and baked goods, and have been taking donations. The team has sold over 100 t-shirts through the week and raised over $125 to be donated to the LLS.
Woods, a junior from Rockwall, has several connections to Austin College. His father Don Woods played football for the Kangaroos and was a member of the 1981 NAIA National Championship team. In addition, Woods’ girlfriend Maddy Millender is a junior midfielder on the ‘Roo women’s soccer team.
Woods is a long snapper and backup offensive guard for the Sooners and has continued in those roles while battling cancer, and earlier this month underwent his final chemotherapy session. Woods has continued to be an inspiration to his teammates at OU, and on Sunday will speak at halftime of the women’s soccer game to share his story.
Donations to the LLS will be taken throughout the game.
