Trinity Men Blank Ohio Northern in NCAA Playoff Match

ELKHORN, Wisc.
- The eighth-ranked Trinity University men defeated Ohio Northern, 5-0, Saturday evening in second round play of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships. The Tigers advance to play 18th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday at Noon.

The winner of Sunday's match, will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 20 at Kalamazoo (MI) College. The team tournament runs from May 20-22, and the individual event from May 23-25. Gustavus Adolphus was a 5-3 winner over hosting Wisconsin-Whitewater in Saturday's second round.

Against Ohio Northern, Trinity opened strong at No. 3 doubles as Connor Dunn and Greg Haugen won 8-0. Erick Delafuente and Jordan Mayer teamed up to capture No. 1 doubles 8-4. Nico Moreno and Aaron Skinner gave Trinity a 3-0 lead by winning No. 2 doubles 8-5.

Mayer registered the first singles victory by taking the No. 5 slot 6-3, 6-2. The clincher for the Tigers came at No. 6 singles, courtesy of a 6-1, 6-0 win by Charlie Curtis.

Four matches did not finish, as the dual match was halted after the Tigers' fifth point. Skinner led 6-5 in the first set of No. 1 singles. Skinner will represent the Tigers in the NCAA Singles Championship at Kalamazoo. Moreno was in a comeback at No. 2 singles, losing the first set 1-6, and leading the second 4-1. Haugen held a 6-3, 3-1 advantage at No. 3 singles, while Delafuente led 7-5 in the first set of the No. 4 match.

Trinity qualified for the NCAA event by winning its 18th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.  It is the fourth conference title and fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons under Head Coach Russell McMindes.
