LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College started the 2012-13 season off in fine fashion as the Gents went 2-0 to win the Shenandoah BB&T Tip-Off tournament. Junior guard Jonathan Blount earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 25 points per game.

Austin College opened the year 1-1 with a blowout win over Millsaps before falling 80-77 on a last second three against East Texas Baptist. Ransom Okpala scored 18 points in a 72-46 win over the Majors and Antoine Thompson scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Against ETBU, the 'Roos battled back from a double digit deficit to tie things up with two threes in the final 42 seconds but ETBU knocked down a game winning trey with three seconds left. Walter Phillips scored 16 and Okpala added 15 to lead the 'Roos.
Centenary opened up the 2012-13 season by going
2-0 and won the Shenandoah BB&T Tip-Off Championship. The Gents
opened the season with a 72-70 win over Goucher. Jonathan Blount
led all scorers as he tallied 27 points on 9 of 22 shooting. Blount
then added 23 points in the Gents’ 80-69 win over host
Shenandoah in the championship game. For his efforts, Blount was
named tournament MVP after averaging 25 points, three assists and
two rebounds per game. He also had a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio.
Centenary returns to action on Nov. 24 when the Gents host
Louisiana College at 3 p.m.
Colorado College stumbled out of the gate, dropping a pair
of games at the Bon Appetit/Northwest Conference Tip-Off Classic in
Oregon. Sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky poured in a career-high
24 points, but the Tigers dropped a 63-58 decision at George Fox
University in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Lesnansky tied the game at 52-52 when he knocked down a jumper with
3:28 to play, but the Bruins took the lead for good with 2:09 to go
and built a five-point advantage on a three-pointer 35 seconds
later. Junior guard Ryan Milne finished with 11 points and four
assists. He climbed into 10th place on the program's all-time list
with 222 assists. Senior forward Ian Rewoldt grabbed a game-high 10
rebounds, and recorded six points and four assists. Colorado
College got off to a slow start and never fully recovered during
Saturday night’s 81-53 loss to Lewis & Clark College. The
Tigers missed their first four shots from the floor and committed
four turnovers as the red-hot Pioneers raced to a 17-4 lead. Junior
guard Jake Tramutolo went 3-for-6 from three-point range and
finished with 11 points, sharing the team lead with Lesnansky. CC
plays for the first time in the newly renovated Reid Arena on
Friday night against Augsburg College in the opening game of the
2012 Thanksgiving Classic.
Dallas (0-2) dropped both games on the week to open their
2012-13 season. Despite a 20-8 lead and junior forward Ross
Davidson's double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds), head coach
Jarred Samples' squad fell 80-69 to East Texas Baptist University
on Friday evening in day-one of Austin College's Bob Mason Classic.
Saturday afternoon (day two) brought more heartache for Dallas, as
a 25-percent shooting percentage resulted in a 52-46 defeat to
former SCAC-foe Millsaps College. With no games scheduled this
week, Dallas will host Southwestern Adventist University at 8:30
p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
Southwestern opened the season against tough
competition in Chicago, dropping both contests to start out 0-2 on
the year. The Pirates opened with Chicago and played well, shooting
over 55% from the field. The game was tied with 1:22 to play and
Southwestern wasn't able to get the go-ahead basket as they fell
74-71. Sunday's contest pitted SU against #21 Washington University
(Mo.). Southwestern fell behind early and couldn't get on a roll as
they fell 85-54. The Pirates return to Texas to face Mary Hardin
Baylor on Tuesday night before taking the rest of the holiday break
off.
Trinity opened the 2012-13 season with a pair of
tough losses at the University of Chicago Invitational over the
weekend. The Tigers started the year with a 69-51 loss to
21st-ranked Washington (Mo.) University on Saturday, then fell
short in a second-half comeback bid against Chicago, losing 64-49
on Sunday. The Tigers open up their home schedule on Tuesday night,
facing Texas Lutheran at 7 p.m. The game will be the only one this
week for Trinity, who will play four games the following week
– including the SCAC openers against Centenary and Austin
College.
