LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College sprang perhaps the win of the year in the SCAC, as the Gents upset No. 22 Colorado College on Friday. Centenary earned a 1-0 win and then earned its second SCAC win by beating Dallas 2-0 on Sunday.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College team split its final two regular
season matches of the season, topping the University of Dallas 2-1
before falling 2-0 to nationally ranked Colorado College. Against
Dallas, James Saulnier got the scoring started when he scored on a
free kick from near midfield and Memo Allande would add the game
winner in the second half off of a rebound of Joey Alcocer’s
shot. Against Colorado College, the ‘Roos used a strong
defensive effort to keep the Tigers at bay for most of the first
half before a corner kick went directly into the corner of the goal
just before halftime, and the Tigers would add another goal late in
the second half to give the ‘Roos the loss.
Centenary (5-12, 2-8) went a perfect 3-0 on the week,
including picking the program’s first-ever SCAC wins. The
Gents started the week off with a 3-0 win over Texas College.
Centenary then finished the weekend off with an upset of No. 22
Colorado College (1-0) before taking down Dallas (2-0). The Gents
will host Louisiana College on Tuesday before heading to the SCAC
tournament. Centenary will be the No. 6 seed and will play No. 3
seed Southwestern on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT at Trinity
University.
No. 22 Colorado College saw its eight-game
unbeaten streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss at Centenary on
Friday night. Despite a 19-10 advantage in total shots, the Tigers
were kept off the scoreboard for only the fourth time this season.
All three of CC’s losses against Division III opponents were
by 1-0 scores. Colorado College tuned up for the 2012 SCAC
Tournament with a 2-0 victory at Austin College in the
regular-season finale on Sunday. All-American Matt Fechter broke
the scoreless deadlock with 2:41 remaining in the first half when
his corner kick curled into the net for what proved to be his fifth
game winner of the season and the 13th of his career. With his 44th
career tally, the senior forward moved into a tie with John
Monteiro (1974-77) for ninth place on the program's all-time list.
Fechter's 16 goals this season are the most by a Tiger since
Patrick McGinnis led the nation with 39 in 2004. Fechter leads the
SCAC in goals (16), assists (13) and points (45). Senior goalkeeper
Forrest Marowitz made both of his saves during the final 3:03 to
complete his fifth shutout of the season and the eighth of his
career. He improved to 10-1-2 this year and lowered his
goals-against average to 0.43. Colorado College enters the SCAC
playoffs as the second seed and will face the winner of Friday's
first-round match between Southwestern University and Centenary
College at 7:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
Dallas (5-9-2, 2-7-1 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in a pair
of SCAC games to close out its regular season schedule. On Friday,
the Crusaders fell 2-1 to Austin College before finishing the
weekend with a 2-0 loss to Centenary. Dallas will enter the SCAC
tournament as the No. 5 seed and draws No. 4 seed Austin College on
Friday at 5 p.m. CT at Trinity University.
Southwestern closed out regular season action with one
conference match and one non-conference game to move to 12-7-1 on
the season and 5-4-1 in the SCAC. SU traveled to San Antonio and
had a huge defensive stand after the opening 23 minutes. Trinity
scored two goals early and Southwestern answered with one goal in
the first half and a second with just over two minutes remaining to
push the game into overtime. Neither team could score the game
winner as the game came to a close after two overtime frames.
Sunday, the Pirates closed out regular season play with a 2-0 win
over UC Santa Cruz. A late goal in the first half by Matthew
Nickell opened things up and Evan Perkins added another early in
the second half. Southwestern enters the SCAC Conference Tournament
as the #3 seed and face #6 Centenary College on Friday night at
7:30 p.m.
No. 2 Trinity went 1-0-1 over the past week, finishing
off the regular season with a 16-0-3 overall record and a
conference mark of 8-0-2. On Wednesday, Trinity finished its
conference schedule with a 2-2 tie in double overtime against
Southwestern. It marked just the third game this season that the
Tigers have allowed more than one goal in a game. The Tigers then
finished off the schedule with a 5-0 shutout of UC-Santa Cruz,
which was the 11th team shutout of the season. Trinity will host
the 2012 SCAC Tournament this weekend, featuring all six SCAC
men’s soccer teams. The Tigers are the top seed in the
tournament, receiving a first-round bye. Trinity will play in the
SCAC Semifinals on Saturday, at 5 p.m. The SCAC Championship
will be played on Sunday afternoon, at 1 p.m.
