LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College began its first season of baseball competition in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference by splitting two games. The Gents started the season with a tough 9-8 loss to East Texas Baptist before earning its first win of 2013 with a 9-7 win over Louisiana College.

Austin College picked up its first win of the
season on Friday when the Kangaroos took down Louisiana College,
7-4 in McKinney, Texas. Austin College then finished the weekend
with losses to Willamette (14-2 & 10-1) on Saturday. Colt
Herron was 3 for 4 with two RBI in the win against Louisiana
College. The Kangaroos had their game with East Texas Baptist
rained out on Sunday. The Kangaroos are now 1-6 on the season.
Austin College returns to action on Feb. 16-17 when the Kangaroos
host Dallas in the SCAC opening series for each team.
Centenary went 1-1 over the weekend to start the 2013
season. The Gents followed a 9-8 setback to East Texas Baptist with
a 9-7; come from behind win over Louisiana College. Ben
Schweinfurth led the Maroon and White at the dish with a .571
batting average (4-for-7). The four hits registered second on the
team in the two contests. The freshman posted a team leading, five
RBI and three doubles in the outings. He also scored four runs on
the weekend. The Gents had five hitters posted a .333 or better
batting average on the week. Matt Creamer joined Schweinfurth with
a .500-plus batting average on the weekend with Creamer leading the
team with five hits (5-for-10) and adding three RBI. Grady Flournoy
logged the only win in the circle with a scoreless, 2.1 innings of
work. The sophomore allowed just one hit and totaled three
strikeouts. Creamer held the opposition to a .125 batting
average.
After falling twice (L, 4-3; L, 8-3) to Howard Payne on Tuesday,
Dallas (3-5) earned their first series win with a
sweep (W, 3-1; W, 9-3; W, 15-3) of Sul Ross State over the weekend
at Crusader Field. Pitching to their first victories of the season
were Andrew Bossert (1-1), Joshua Crapps (1-0) and Chris Schierhorn
(1-0). Tug McRoberts now sports a .433 batting average after a big
week, which included a triple and eight runs. Trevor Keele and Alex
Thornton each went yard in Dallas' 15-3 victory over Sul Ross on
Sunday. Head coach Fraser Holmes' squad will head to Sherman,
Texas, to battle Austin College over the weekend in a three-game
series.
Southwestern went 0-3 on the weekend against LeTourneau.
In game 1 the pitching struggled for the Pirates allowing 17 runs
to cross the plate in game one. In game two the Pirates took an
early 4-0 lead and held the it until LeTourneau rallied in the top
of the 7th. LeTourneau scored 6 runs in the 7th inning giving them
a 6-4 lead. The Pirates plated one run in the bottom of the 7th but
fell short it a 6-5 lose. Game 3 didn't go much better for the
pirates as the yellow jackets scored 6 runs early. The Pirates
fought back scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th and 4 more in
bottom on the 5th taking a 7-6 lead. The yellow jackets plated 4
more runs over the next 4 innings and the pirates on plating 2 runs
losing a close battle 10-9.
No. 11 Trinity did not play this past
week, after opening the season by winning two out of three games at
Chapman University the previous weekend. The Tigers will resume
play with three games this week, starting with the team’s
home opener against future SCAC member Schreiner University on
Tuesday. Trinity then hosts Huston-Tillotson in a
doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The team will play 11 of its next
13 games at home, which includes six SCAC games.
