Baseball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule began during the week of Feb. 11-17. SCAC newcomer Centenary College earned a three game sweep of Southwestern by averaging 16 runs per game.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College (2-8, 1-2 SCAC) went 1-2 against the University of Dallas to open up its 2013 SCAC schedule. The Kangaroos took the series opener on Saturday, 4-3, before dropping the final two game to the Crusaders 13-6 and 9-2. Austin College returns to the diamond on Feb. 19 when they ‘Roos travel to East Texas Baptist. Austin College will then travel to No. 11 Trinity for a three game SCAC series.

Centenary opened SCAC action with a sweep of Southwestern over the weekend to compile a 4-1 record for the week. For the week, James led the squad with a .615 average at the plate. The Gents amassed 48 runs over the three-game series with the Pirates with breakout, seventh innings in all three affairs. The Maroon and White combined for 22 runs in seventh innings only over the weekend. Five Gents posted averages of .500 or better at the dish for the weekend with eight hitting above .333. Marc Martinez and Tyler Clakley each drove in nine runs to lead the squad while Jemari James posted a .778 batting average to pace the hitters. Four Gents compiled at least five hits for the weekend with James, Craig Littleman and Clakley each registering seven hits for the weekend. Layton Tromba put together a complete game decision on the hill for the Gents’ pitching staff. Tromba tied for the team-best four strikeouts and posted a 3.86 ERA – the best among Gents’ starters for the weekend. Chase Clarke and Cole Thompson each gathered wins on the bump for the Maroon and White. In all eight hurlers took to the hill for Centenary as the staff posted a 4.91 ERA with 18 total strikeouts in the three wins over SU.

Dallas (5-6, 2-1 SCAC) went 2-1 over the weekend at Austin College to claim their first conference series of the 2013 season. Saturday's doubleheader saw the Crusaders follow a 4-3 (F/9) extra-inning loss with a 13-6 (F/7) victory. Andrew Bossert was hit with a no decision in game one, despite striking out 10 in seven innings on the bump. Chris Schierhorn (2-0) was the winning pitcher of record in game two, as he surrendered just two runs over five innings. Head coach Fraser Holmes' squad achieved a 9-2 win in Sunday's rubber match. Alex Thornton tallied a double and triple in the affair and finished the series with six hits, which included three doubles, a triple and home run. Dallas continues conference play with a weekend home series versus Southwestern University -- Saturday (12 p.m. doubleheader); Sunday (1 p.m. nine inning).

Southwestern went 0-4 losing one game to TLU and losing three games to Centenary College. On Tuesday night the pirates lost a hard battles against TLU 7-4. Matt Litz threw 6 inning and allowing only 3 earned runs. The pirates are still continuing to play error free baseball which was a determining factor in the loss to TLU. The pirates opened up conference play on Saturday with a DH against Centenary College and a single game on Sunday. The pirates lost all three games getting sweep on the weekend series.

No. 11 Trinity went 3-0 over the past week, beginning with a 14-1 win over future SCAC member Schreiner University on Tuesday. The Tigers went on to sweep a doubleheader from Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday, winning 12-9 and 15-3. The Tigers improved to 5-1 this season with the three home wins, and will continue play Tuesday afternoon at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Trinity and UMHB played twice last season, with the Tigers winning 5-3 and 9-3 over the Crusaders.
