Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University exploded for 22 goals as the Pirates opened up the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse league schedule with a 22-2 home win over Centenary College on March 1.

AROUND THE SCAC

Centenary dropped a pair of contests over the weekend, including a 22-2 setback in SCAC action to Southwestern. Matt Thomas scored the only two goals on the week for the Gents off assists from Noel Veneracion and Garrett Wick. Centenary took just 11 shots on the weekend with seven coming against the Pirates on Friday evening. The Gents were stymied Sunday against Misericordia and goalie Patrick Johnson that held the Maroon and White to just four shots in the 27-0 outing. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Mar. 8 as the Gents face Rhodes at 3 p.m.

Colorado College suffered its first loss of the 2013 season by an 11-7 count at Division II Colorado Mesa University on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. Sophomore midfielder Henri Halle tied his career high with three goals, including a pair in a span of 90 seconds late in the second quarter to knot the score at 3-3 after 30 minutes. The Mavericks broke the game open with five consecutive tallies to open the second half, but junior midfielder Jack Kreitler, sophomore midfielder Taylor Paul and Halle found the cage during a 3-0 run that saw CC battle back to within 8-6 just seven seconds into the fourth quarter. That proved to be as close as the Tigers would get because CMU added a pair of tallies to extend its lead 10-6 midway through the fourth quarter and the teams traded goals during the final seven minutes to close out the scoring. Freshman goaltender Chase Murphy stopped 11 shots for the Tigers, his second game of the season with double-digit saves, while junior attackman Tyler Allen set a career high with 13 ground balls for Colorado College. The contest was a statistical draw. The Tigers finished with 39-36 edge in total shots and won 11 of 21 face-offs., while Mesa enjoyed a 45-41 difference in ground balls. Colorado College plays at home for the first time next Saturday when Trine University visits Washburn Field at noon.

Dallas
was idle this week, and will play their home-opener on Saturday versus Regis College (Mass.) in a 12 p.m. showdown at Crusader Field.

Southwestern
started its conference season with a 22-2 win over Centenary. The Pirates have also won games versus Rhodes College and Hendrix College. The Rhodes College game was a 12-6 score with great performances by sophomore Austin Fox with 3 goals, junior attack Mike Villa with 3 goals and senior attack Jamie Long with 2 goals and 3 Assists. The Pirates kept up the scoring with another solid performance against rival Hendrix 13-6. Jamie long again played solid with 2 goals and 4 assists and Austin Fox again scored 3 goals and 2 assists. The Pirates traveled to California to play two games vs. SUNY Oneonta and Whittier College. The Pirates lost to SUNY Oneonta 12-3 and lost to Whittier 8-7.
