LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College wrapped up the No. 1 seed in next week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship tournament by taking both games from Austin College over the weekend. The Gents, in their first year in the SCAC, are currently 24-9 overall and 15-3 in league play.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College (10-27, 7-12 SCAC) dropped three
games during the week. The Kangaroos started the week with a tough
7-6 loss to Ozarks in McAlester, Okla. before falling 4-3 and 5-1
to Centenary in SCAC play over the weekend. The Kangaroos return to
action April 16 when they host Arlington Baptist. Austin
College will be the No. 4 seed for the SCAC tournament and will
square off against No. 5 seed Southwestern on April 25 at 7 p.m. at
Southwestern in the first round of the SCAC tournament.
Centenary clinched the top spot in the SCAC Baseball
Championship with a two-game, series sweep of Austin College. The
Gents received a pair of complete-game, pitching gems highlighted
by Cole Thompson’s nine strikeout performance to secure the
seeding. The Plano, Texas native fanned a batter in each inning,
including a striking out the final batter of the contest on three
consecutive pitches. Layton Tromba logged his sixth win of the
season allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in his
team leading, seventh, complete-game of the season. Six Gents
recorded multiple hit outings on the weekend with Zachary
Stephenson and Ryan Gasporra each tallying three hits over the two
games. Tyler Clakley led the squad in RBI with three. Centenary now
turns its attention to a non-conference contest with cross-town
rival LSU-Shreveport on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Dallas (16-19, 10-8 SCAC) fell twice to No. 10 ranked
Trinity University over the weekend. On Saturday in San Antonio,
the Crusaders were dealt an 8-3 loss. Dallas tied the game 3-3 in
the top of the seventh, but Trinity responded with four runs in the
bottom-half of the inning en route to a five-run victory.
The Tigers clawed to a 14-4 seven-inning run-rule of head coach
Fraser Holmes' squad on Sunday. LeTourneau University and Centenary
College of Louisiana are on the docket this week for Dallas. The
Crusaders will head to Longview, Texas, to combat LeTourneau in a 5
p.m. doubleheader (2x7) on Tuesday. Dallas will conclude the
regular season over the weekend versus Centenary -- (Saturday, 1
p.m. 1x9; Sunday, 1 p.m. 1x9). The club will look to send its
seniors -- Adam Farris, Nico Caluda, Chris Schierhorn, Trevor
Allred and Andrew Laux -- out in style on Senior Day
(Sunday).
Southwestern (3-32, 0-17 SCAC) went 1-2 during the week
beating Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-7 before dropping two games to
non-conference opponent Texas-Dallas (13-2, 15-8) over the weekend.
The Pirates return to action on April 15 and 16 when they travel to
Concordia (Texas) and Hardin-Simmons, respectively before hosting
Trinity for two SCAC games over the weekend.
No. 13 Trinity was 3-0 over the past week, capped by a
two-game SCAC weekend series sweep at home against the University
of Dallas. The Tigers swept the season series from the Crusaders,
having earlier own three meetings on the road. Trinity also
finished off a series sweep against Concordia, earning a 2-1 road
win over the Tornados. With the wins over Dallas, Trinity has
secured the #2 seed for the SCAC Championships Tournament, hosted
by Southwestern at the end of the month. Trinity will finish off
the regular season road schedule with three games this week. The
Tigers start with a Tuesday afternoon game at Texas Lutheran,
followed by two SCAC games at Southwestern over the weekend.
Earlier in the year, Trinity beat TLU 8-6, and swept a three-game
home series against the Pirates.
