AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College put together its best offensive performance
of the season, piling up 267 rushing yards and 370 total yards of
offense, but it wasn’t enough to overcome No. 13-ranked
Birmingham-Southern on the road on Saturday afternoon as the
‘Roos fell 49-21. The ‘Roos are now 1-4 overall this
season. The ‘Roos fell in a 21-0 hole after one quarter
before outscoring the Panthers 14-7 in the second quarter with
Bryce Murphy scoring from a yard out and Sean Sweeney adding a nine
yard rushing touchdown late in the half to make it 28-14 heading
into the break. The Panthers took advantage of an early second half
turnover to quickly make it 35-14, but a 59 yard touchdown run by
Murphy made it a two touchdown game in the fourth quarter. However,
the Panthers returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown
and forced the ‘Roos to turn the ball over on downs deep in
their own territory, scoring two plays later to make it a 49-21
final.
Trinity defeated Rhodes 30-22 on Saturday, improving to
3-2 on the season, and 18-12 in the all-time series. The Tigers
have won 17 of the last 20 meetings, dating back to 1983. Garrett
Biel hit a third quarter field goal to make it 23-14, which marked
the 36th field goal in his career, and breaks Trinity’s
career record set by Todd Canion (2001-04). He now holds the single
game record for field goals and extra points, the single season
field goals record, and the career field goals record. Desmond King
led Trinity in both rushing and receiving in the game, piling up
159 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Tiger defense
held Rhodes to -16 yards rushing in the game, recording 5.0 sacks
and 12.0 tackles for loss. Trinity will be off this week, then will
have back-to-back road games on October 13 and 20 against
Birmingham-Southern & Centre. The Tigers return home October
27, facing off against Millsaps.
