Volleyball Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University extended its winning streak to six matches with a 3-0 win over Howard Payne during the week. The Pirates are now 12-4 overall and 3-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 2-1 over the weekend, topping Centre College and Hendrix College before falling to Oklahoma City University. The ‘Roos are now 9-8 overall this season. The ‘Roos opened the weekend by topping the Colonels 25-9, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23 before sweeping the Warriors 25-21, 28-26, 25-18 on Saturday, and on Sunday fell 25-23, 23-25, 16-25, 21-25 to OCU. Shelby Eaves averaged 3.55 kills and 4.27 digs per set to lead the ‘Roos and Adrienne Reynolds averaged 6.64 digs per set. Kelly McDaniel had a strong weekend as well, averaging 11.45 assists and 2.73 digs per set. 

Centenary
(0-15) had the week off. The Ladies return to action Oct. 2 when they travel to Jackson, Miss. to take on Belhaven (Miss.).

No. 17 Colorado College
went 2-2 during four non-conference matches last week in Oregon. The Tigers won their first two matches against George Fox University, 3-1, and Linfield College, 3-0. CC ended the week falling to Pacific University, 3-2 and No. 10 University of Puget Sound, 3-1. Sophomore Kristen Liberty led the Tigers during their wins with a combined 23 kills, while senior Laura Goldsmith led the defense with a combined 45 digs. CC continues on the road this week as it resumes conference play in Sherman, Texas. The Tigers take on the University of Dallas and Southwestern University on Saturday and finish the week against Trinity University on Sunday.

Dallas
(8-7, 1-2 SCAC) went 2-1 on the week. The Crusaders dropped a 3-1 decision to Howard Payne before sweeping Dallas Christian and LeTourneau to finish the week. Dallas returns to action on Oct. 4 when the Crusaders host Arlington Baptist and Rust.

On Tuesday night No. 25 Southwestern traveled to Howard Payne and despite a slow start to the match easily defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-0. Southwestern dominated the hitting percentage in the first match with a .250 while holding HPU to .143, but were still challenged in the match, winning 25-22. The Pirates turned things around in the second set and cruised the rest of the way, winning 25-17 in the final two matches. Now 12-4 on the season, Southwestern had the weekend off and returns to action on October 3 as they travel to St. Edward's University. They then dive back into SCAC conference action at Sherman, facing Colorado College, Trinity, and Austin College in three highly-anticipated matches.

Trinity
upped its streak to seven consecutive wins, defeating Our Lady of the Lake University, Texas Lutheran University, and Schreiner University last week. The Tigers opened the week of non-tournament play with a 3-2 win over OLLU, rallying after dropping the opening set, and taking the victory. Trinity then swept TLU 3-0, and downed Schreiner 3-1 to finish off the week. After starting the season with an 0-8 record, Trinity has now won eight of its past nine matches. This week, the Tigers start off with a rematch against Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas, on Wednesday evening. Trinity resumes SCAC play this weekend with three matches at Austin College. The Tigers will face Centenary and #25 Southwestern on Saturday, followed by a rematch with #17 Colorado College on Sunday. Trinity is currently tied atop the SCAC standings with a 3-0 record.
