AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 1-1 over the weekend,
picking up a dramatic 2-1 victory over Millsaps on Saturday before
falling 2-0 to Rhodes on Sunday. The ‘Roos are now 2-4
overall this season. Against Millsaps, the ‘Roos grabbed a
1-0 lead on a goal from Ariel Marder and looked to be on their way
to a 1-0 victory, but the Majors tallied in the final minutes to
send the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, the
‘Roos wasted little time to end the game in the second extra
frame when Ariel Marder found Lauren Scott for the game winning
goal less than a minute into the period. Against Rhodes, the
‘Roos surrendered two goals in less than two minutes midway
through the first half and were unable to recover.
Centenary (2-1-1) beat LeTourneau 4-2
before having its game with Wiley rained out. The Ladies return to
action on Sept. 21 when they travel to Sherman, Texas to square off
with Austin College. The game will mark Centenary’s first
game as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference.
Dallas (6-1) went 1-1 on the week in a pair of home
games. Saturday brought Rhodes College to Irving, Texas. The Lynx
handed Dallas their first loss of the season, an overtime defeat.
The Lady Crusaders led 2-1 late, after goals from Marissa Garcia
and Melissa Carpenter. In the 75-minute, Rhodes' Lauren Albright
leveled the score from a Paula Vasichko assist to force overtime.
In the extra period at 91:38, Beth Ann McCloskey slid the 'golden
goal' past goalkeeper Brigid Hasson, handing Dallas their first
loss of the season. The team had no time to sulk, as they played
host to Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon. In wake of Saturday's
loss, Dallas turned it on versus the Lady Majors. Marin Chambers
led the way with two goals for a Dallas squad tabbing five
different goal scorers in a 7-2 win. The Lady Crusaders landed 17
shots on goal, on their way to 29-9 shot advantage. On tap this
week for Dallas is a 5 p.m. home contest versus the University of
Texas-Tyler on Tuesday, before opening conference on the road
against Trinity (Friday, 4 p.m.) and Southwestern (Sunday, 2
p.m.).
Southwestern returned from its trip to California, going
1-1 on the weekend to move to 1-6 on the season. UC Santa Cruz
controlled most of the game on Saturday, scoring three first half
goals while holding SU scoreless as the Pirates fell 4-0. The
Pirates rebounded well, however, with a huge win over Mills College
on Sunday. Lindsay Jakszta score three goals in the first 18
minutes of the game to kick start Southwestern's offense. When all
was said and done the Pirates took home the 8-0 win and allowed
just one shot in the match while taking 35, 24 of them on goal. SU
will ride the momentum into SCAC conference action as they open
with Trinity on Saturday afternoon in Georgetown.
No. 3 Trinity played just once over the last
week, opening up the home portion of its schedule with a 3-0 win
over Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday night. The Tigers
jumped out with two goals in the opening period, as both Emily
Donnan and Stephanie Segovia scored. Shelby Guenthardt wrapped up
the scoring with the only goal of the second half. Katy Lipscomb
had one assist, while Kelsey Falcone had a pair of assists –
including one on the game-winner. Trinity recorded its third
straight shutout, and has allowed just one goal all season. The
Tigers have outscored the opposition 7-0 over the past two weeks of
play. This weekend, Trinity will open up SCAC play against the
University of Dallas and Southwestern University. The Tigers host
Dallas at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon, then will travel to
Georgetown, Texas, to face Southwestern on Saturday. Trinity
recorded shutout wins over both teams last season.
