Men's Basketball Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - As the holidays and final exams approach, only four SCAC teams were in action during the week of Dec. 3-9. Colorado College hosted Austin College for the first back-to-back conference games against the same two opponents since Oglethorpe and Southwestern played consecutive games in February of 2000.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College (1-8, 0-4 SCAC) went 0-2 last week, dropping two SCAC games to Colorado College on the road. Friday, the Kangaroos dropped a 68-49 decision to the Tigers. Austin College was led by Ransom Okpala’s 11 points and Walter Phillip’s 10 points. Saturday, the Kangaroos were on the wrong end of a 71-56 decision. Leading Austin College was Phillips who tallied 12 points and six rebounds. The Kangaroos return to action on Dec.15 when they travel to Hendrix for a non-conference game.

Centenary (5-3) split its two games this week defeating LeTourneau 57-54 on Monday and falling to LSU-Shreveport 92-71 on Friday. It came down to the final 7.3 seconds on Monday, as sophomore Jairus Browning knocked down the game winning three pointer to put the Gents on top with 3 seconds remaining. The trey brought Browning to 13 points on the night to tie for a team high. Freshmen Brett Bell also had 13 points and had a team high 8 rebounds. On Friday, Centenary and cross-town rival LSU-Shreveport met at “The Dock” on LSUS’s campus, which is about 5 miles away from Centenary. This is the first time since 2007 that these teams would meet in what is now being called the “Crosstown Classic.” The atmosphere was tough for the Gents being on the road, but a little run at the end of the half kept the deficit under double digits 45-37. Sophomore JaColby Hardin-Crawford had a season high 23 points, going 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Senior Jonathan Blount added 18 points in his first game back after missing the last three. Centenary will play next Saturday at University of Dallas at 3 p.m.

Colorado College
extended its winning streak to four games with a pair of victories over Austin College last weekend. Junior guard Jake Tramutolo drained five of seven shots from behind the arc en route to a team-high 15 points as the Tigers began conference play with a 68-49 victory over the ‘Roos on Friday night. On Friday night, CC took the lead for good when freshman guard Juwan Rohan’s three pointer ignited a 13-2 run 5:16 into the game. The Tigers dialed long distance eight times during the first half and tied their team high with 13 long-range buckets. Senior forward Ian Rewoldt grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and recorded a career-high six steals to lead the defense. Junior guard Ryan Milne contributed with 13 points and four assists for the Tigers. The following night, Milne and sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky combined for 39 points to lead the Tigers to a 71-56 triumph. CC trailed 21-15 midway through the first half when freshman guard Justin Berardino triggered a 12-1 run with a long-range bomb for his only basket of the game. Leading 43-34 after 20 minutes, Lesnansky scored six of his 19 points during a 10-0 run that gave Colorado College a 53-34 lead with 15:36 to play and AC could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Milne finished with a game-high 20 points, the second time this season and the 16th time in his career he finished with 20 or more. He became the 10th player in school history to record 250 career assists and the 26th Tiger to score 800 or more points on Saturday night. CC is idle until Dec. 29 when it plays the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the first of three non-conference games in Southern California.

Dallas
(3-2) is idle until Saturday, Dec. 15, when they open SCAC-play at home versus Centenary College of Louisiana.

Southwestern had a light week of action, facing soon to be SCAC opponent Schreiner on Tuesday night. The Pirates scored four more points from the free throw line to defeat the Mountaineers 75-69. Brief runs and strong defense pushed the Pirates on to victory to improve to 2-5 on the season. SU has an off week for finals before returning to action by hosting a tournament beginning December 17th.

Trinity (4-3, 2-0 SCAC) had the week off. The Tigers will be off until after finals, resuming play on December 17 and 18 at the Southwestern Classic in Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers will face Howard Payne and SUNYIT in the tournament.
