GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers, thanks to its fifth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) championship in the last eight years, placed a tournament-high eight players on the 2013 SCAC Baseball All-Tournament team, as selected by the participating head coaches. The eight Trinity players ties the league record for most players on an SCAC Baseball All-Tournament team. Millsaps College placed eight on the All-Tournament team in 2005.
Entering the tournament as the number two
seed, the Tigers rattled off three wins over three days to win the
league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball
Championship and will be the eighth NCAA appearance in program
history. Junior outfielder Pat Hirschberg, the Co-SCAC Player of
the Year this season, was a near unanimous selection to the
All-Tournament team after he hit .455 with one triple and seven
runs batted in.
Hirschberg’s teammates Connor Moore (second base) and Zack
Speer (pitcher) were each unanimous selections. Moore was named to
the team after he hit a sizzling .583 (7-12) with a double, three
walks, two RBI and eight runs scored. Speer earned a spot on the
team after earned the win in the championship game over Centenary
College. He threw eight innings and scattered six hits and one
earned run (1.12 ERA) while striking out five and limited opponents
to a .207 batting average.
SCAC runner-up Centenary had four total players named to the all-tournament team followed by Dallas with one all-tournament team selection. Trinity junior shortstop Christian Muscarello (2011) was the only player on this year’s team to previously be named to the SCAC All-Tournament team more than once.
