Women's Soccer Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Third-ranked Trinity University and Austin College went a combined 3-0 during the opening weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this past weekend. The Tigers went 2-0 while the Kangaroos went 1-0.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 1-0-1 over the weekend, picking up its first SCAC victory of the season with a 3-1 victory over Centenary before drawing 1-1 after two overtimes against Concordia-Texas. The ‘Roos are now 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Against Centenary, Abby Saizow put the ‘Roos on the board just before halftime on a corner kick from Kelsey D’Amore, and in the second half Natalie Nelms headed home a free kick by Ariel Marder and Marder added another assist when she found Hannah Poenisch on a corner kick. Against Concordia, Saizow scored again as the ‘Roos battled to the draw. This week the ‘Roos jump back into conference action with games against the University of Dallas, Southwestern and Trinity.

Centenary (3-2-1, 0-1 SCAC) went 1-1 on the week. The Ladies came up short in a 3-1 decision to Austin College in the program’s first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match before salvaging the weekend with a 2-1 win over Hendrix. Against Austin College, the Ladies’ Madison Alexander tied the game at 1-1 in the 68th minute. However, the Kangaroos’ Natalie Nelms scored the game-winner just a minute later before the Roos tacked on an insurance tally in the 80th minute. Against Hendrix, Alexander scored both goals in win. Centenary returns to action this weekend hosting #3 Trinity and Southwestern in SCAC play.

Dallas (8-2, 1-1 SCAC) went 2-1 the week in which they opened conference play. Tuesday brought former Dallas head coach Stefani Webb's University of Texas-Tyler squad to Irving, Texas. Junior forward Claire Sexton's 25th-minute goal proved the difference, as the Lady Crusaders recorded their fourth shutout of 2012 with a 1-0 victory over the Lady Patriots. Up next for Dallas were two road SCAC matches. The team headed to San Antonio for a showdown with No. 3 Trinity University on Friday afternoon. Nicole Johnson was a bright spot for Dallas, as the sophomore forward recorded two goals in a game seeing Dallas fall 6-2. Coach Corona's team then trekked to Georgetown, Texas, for a Sunday date with Southwestern University. Paige Duggins broke a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute, giving Southwestern the 1-0 advantage. Dallas countered with a pair of goals to claim a 2-1 victory, as Sexton (73rd minute) and Johnson (80th minute) found the back of the net. On tap this week for Dallas are three games -- Home: Austin College (Tuesday, 5 p.m.), Neutral: Rocky Mountain College-Mont. (Saturday, 6 p.m. MST), and Road: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Ariz. (Sunday, 10 a.m. MST).

To open SCAC play, Southwestern faced Trinity on Saturday night and the University of Dallas on Sunday and dropped both matches to start out 0-2. Trinity came out strong and scored early in the game to set the tone and lead 4-0 at halftime. Southwestern was much stronger in the second frame, allowing just one goal, but couldn't get anything going offensively as they fell 5-0. Sunday, it was the Pirates that jumped out to lead 1-0 after a Paige Duggins goal in the 63rd minute. Dallas came back strong, however, and scored two goals in 13 minutes to seal the Pirates fate. With the losses the Pirate fall to 1-8 on the season. They remain at home and return to non-conference action on Tuesday night as they face Howard Payne University at 7 p.m.

No. 3 Trinity
swept a pair of SCAC games over the weekend, defeating University of Dallas 6-2 at home, then earning a 5-0 shutout at Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers earned shutout wins over both teams last season. Shelby Guenthardt came off the bench with two goals in Friday’s win over Dallas, scoring once in each half of play. Trinity led 4-0 late in the first half, but Dallas scored consecutive goals to cut the lead in half midway through the second. Kelsey Falcone and Mariah Risk both added a goal and an assist in the win. On Sunday, Trinity had five different players score goals – including Guenthardt and Falcone. Guenthardt also added an assist, while Katy Lipscomb netted the eventual game-winner in the third minute of play. Lipscomb also added an assist on the game’s final goal, while Shelby Hopkins finished with two assists in the game. Trinity will open up another SCAC weekend on Friday, traveling to Shreveport, La., to take on SCAC newcomer Centenary College. The Tigers finish the weekend at Austin College on Sunday afternoon.
