SAN ANTONIO, Texas - On Saturday, Trinity and Millsaps will face off in a football game that will also mark the five-year anniversary of the Trinity Miracle Play.
The play started on Trinity's own 39-yard line with just two seconds remaining on the clock. The Tigers trailed the Majors 22-24 in a game that would likely decide the 2007 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. Nearly everyone in attendance in Jackson, Mississippi thought the game was over - only the final ticks on the scoreboard remained to finish off the Millsaps victory. Fortunately, Trinity's players didn't get that message.
Seven different players touched the ball during the ensuing play that lasted 62 seconds on the field. It started with a simple pass across the middle from Blake Barmore to Shawn Thompson, and ended an astounding 15 laterals later, with Riley Curry racing to the corner of the end zone to give Trinity a 28-24 win. Also touching the ball on the play were offensive linemen Stephen Arnold and Josh Hooten, receiver Michael Tomlin, and tight end Brandon Maddux.
The Trinity Miracle Play has been viewed nearly 2,000,000 times on just the top two Youtube.com videos, and garnered attention from media outlets around the world. It was broadcast on national and local television and radio shows, picked up by countless news organizations, recognized by Time Magazine, and named the Pontiac Game-Changing Performance of the Year. The play also earned an ESPY nomination as the top play of the year, though it finished second in the final voting.
Saturday's game will be the 36th meeting between Trinity and Millsaps – a series that dates back to 1974. Millsaps leads the series with a record of 19-16, which includes three straight wins by the Majors after the Trinity Miracle Play. The Tigers snapped that streak with a 10-3 road win last season.
