Volleyball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The field is set for the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament. Colorado College will serve as host for the annual postseason championship event and the event will run Friday & Saturday, November 2-3.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went undefeated at the Southwestern Halloween Invitational over the weekend, topping Susquehanna, Our Lady of the Lake and Huston-Tillotson 3-0 before coming back for a 3-2 victory over East Texas Baptist. With their win over Susquehanna, the ‘Roos surpassed 20 victories for the 15th straight season under head coach Ed Garza. Kelly McDaniel had an outstanding weekend, averaging 10.64 assists and 3.57 digs per set, and Shelby Eaves averaged 6.0 digs per set with only two receiving errors. Shelby Eaves led the ‘Roos with an average of 2.93 kills per set and added 2.21 digs per set for the weekend. 

Centenary
(2-29, 0-10) finished the week 1-3 overall. Centenary lost to Martin Methodist, Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern before the Ladies were able to pick up a 3-0 win over Bridgewater State. The Ladies will be the No. 6 seed in the SCAC tournament, playing No. 3 Southwestern in the first round.

No. 19 Colorado College
took the week off as it gets ready for the 2012 SCAC Volleyball Championships. The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Tuesday as they host Division II University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for its Dig Pink Night at 7 p.m. CC hosts the SCAC Volleyball Championships for the first time on Friday and Saturday in Reid Arena.

Dallas
played this past weekend in the Barker Classic volleyball tournament in Bloomington, Ill. The Crusaders went 0-4 in the tournament including hard-fought 5-set losses to host Illinois Wesleyan and Anderson. UD also fell to Webster (Mo.) in four sets and in straight sets to Carthage. Dallas was led by freshman outside hitter Jaime Birzer (4.00 kills/set, .222 hitting %, 3.12 digs/set, 10 aces) and sophomore middle Emily Caples (2.47 kills/set, .313 hitting %).

Southwestern
closed out regular season action by hosting the annual Halloween Tournament. The Pirates went 3-1 at the tournament to end the regular season at 22-10 overall and remain at 7-3 in the SCAC. SU opened with Our Lady of the Lake and defeated the Saints 3-1 in close sets. Hardin-Simmons was on deck and challenged the Pirates to a long opening match where Southwestern prevailed 27-25. It was all HSU from then on out as the Cowgirls won the final three sets to hand SU a 3-1 loss. On day two the Pirates needed just three sets to defeat St. Thomas (TX) 26-24, 25-23, 25-15. After a short senior day recognition of Rachel Sellari, Rachel Thibodeau and Kayla Saenger the Pirates closed out the weekend facing Susquehanna. SU dropped the first set but rebounded with big wins in the final three sets to win 3-1. Southwestern enters the SCAC Conference Tournament this weekend as the #3 seed. The tournament will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo. and the Pirates face #6 Centenary at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Trinity wrapped up its regular season schedule with a 4-1 record over the past week, including a 3-1 mark at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament. The Tigers lost the opening match of the tournament 3-2 against Hardin-Simmons, but then rallied for three straight wins to finish the weekend. The Tigers opened the week with a 3-0 sweep against Concordia (Texas) on Wednesday, then began the tournament on Friday. After the opening loss, Trinity rallied for a 3-0 win over St. Thomas (Texas) to finish the first day of action. The Tigers then beat UT-Dallas 3-1 and Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-0 to close out the weekend. Maggie Emodi was named to the All-Tournament Team. Trinity will play in the SCAC Tournament this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Tigers are the #2 seed in the tournament, and have received a bye in the first round. Trinity will face either Southwestern or Centenary in the SCAC Semifinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 2. The winner advances to the Championship Match, which will be Saturday at 6 p.m.
