KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Three men's soccer student-athletes from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference were named to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) Scholar All-America team, the organization announced.
Trinity University senior defender Denny Mask highlighted the SCAC's selections as the Tulsa, Okla. native was named to the second-team with a 3.35 grade point average as a sociology major.
Earning third-team honors were Trinity's Darren McAfee and Southwestern University's Evan Perkins. McAfee had a 3.34 GPA as an engineering major while Perkins earned the honor with a 3.66 GPA as a biology major.
The three selections from the SCAC were the second most of any Division III conference. Only the NESCAC, with four selections, had more Scholar All-America honorees than the SCAC. To be named Scholar All-America, a college student must attain a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
In addition to the Scholar All-America teams, the NSCAA also announced its Scholar All-Region teams and the SCAC was well represented. A total of five student-athletes earned Scholar All-Region honors.
Mask, McAfee and Perkins were each named to the Scholar All-South region first-team. Trinity senior midfielder Michael Micheletti was named to the All-South second-team. Micheletti carried a 3.50 GPA as an accounting major.
Rounding out the SCAC's selections to the Scholar All-Region teams was Colorado College senior midfielder Kyle Buchwalder. Buchwalder was named to the All-West region first-team while maintaining a 3.94 GPA as a biochemistry major.
