CHRISTIAN ALAEKWE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a senior guard from Fresno, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 24 through Sunday, January 30. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 12)

Alaekwe poured in a season-high 30 points in the Celts lone contest last week, a 79-63, win over Dallas to improve to 7-2 in league play.  He was extremely efficient, shooting 68.8 percent from the field (11-for-16), including a blistering 54.5 percent from beyond the arc, connecting on 6-of-11 from distance. Alaekwe also added seven rebounds, two assists and one steal in the win. The 11 field goals made is tied for the second most this season, while the six three-point field goals made is tied for the third most in a single contest this year. Alaekwe has now scored 18 or more points in nine-straight games.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior forward Seth Thomas of Centenary averaged 15.3 points last week on 55.6 percent shooting as the Gents went 2-1 in three SCAC games on the week. Thomas, who connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in three games, added 1.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game last week. Senior guard Scott Cunningham of Colorado College led the Tigers with 18 points in last Friday’s loss to Dallas. It marked the seventh time in the last eight contests Cunningham has been in double-figures for scoring. Junior guard Darian Gibson of Schreiner led the Mountaineers to a pair of SCAC road wins last week, defeating Austin College and Centenary. He averaged 16.0 points on 57.9 percent shooting and added 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.5 steals per game. Junior guard Preston Hannah of Southwestern led the Pirates to a 2-1 week in conference play, averaging 14 points and four assists per game, shooting 51.7 percent from the field, including 37.5 percent from deep in wins over Texas Lutheran and Austin College. Senior guard AJ Clark of Trinity maintained his do-it-all role in the Tigers' gameplan last week with a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double in Saturday's last-moment victory at Texas Lutheran. His total off the glass set a new career-high and was the best-individual performance off the glass by a Trinity player in a road game since the 2005-06 campaign. The San Antonio-native averaged 10 rebounds and six assists over the Tigers' 2-0 week in road conference matchups at Southwestern along with the trip to Seguin.
