KARA SPICE OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior defensive specialist from Cypress, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 25 through Sunday, October 1. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 5)

Spice averaged an incredible 11.20 digs per set as the Celts posted a 2-1 mark on the week. She had a career high 47 digs on Friday against Southwestern, the third-most in a four-set match in SCAC history. Spice bookended the week with a 37-dig performance in Sunday's loss to Texas Lutheran, which marked the most digs ever by a SCAC student-athlete in a three-set match. The junior also had an offensive showing with five service aces on the week. 

Spice is currently leading the SCAC with 6.74 digs per set and will likely be in the top five in the nation when the national leaders are updated later this week.

Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Junior libero/defensive specialist Faith Coldewey of Texas Lutheran led the Bulldogs with 43 digs (7.17 per set) as her team swept through the week with wins against Huston-Tillotson and St. Thomas. Senior libero Nadia Kern of Trinity led 10th-ranked Trinity to a 4-0 weekend sweep in SCAC play, capped by a reverse sweep victory over hosting Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. Kern finished with a team-best 44 digs (3.67/set) over the weekend, including a 19-dig (3.80/set) performance in the win over Colorado College. She also had double-digit digs (11) in Saturday's 3-0 win over Austin College, preceded by eight digs (4.00/set) in just two sets played in the weekend opener against Dallas. First-year libero Meghan Gannon of Colorado College led the Tigers with 63 digs (4.20 per set) as CC went 3-1 during an SCAC Crossover weekend in Colorado Springs. She also paced the Tigers with 16 service aces. First-year libero Laynie Kovacs of Austin College had another big weekend, averaging 5.7 digs-per-set on her way to surpassing 200 so far this season. She totaled 57 digs in three matches, hitting double-digits in all three while also posting three service aces, five assists, and only five reception error.
