KERRVILLE, Texas -- Fourth-seeded University of St. Thomas advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round with a 5-0 victory over fifth-seeded and tournament host Schreiner University Friday afternoon in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinal play at the Cree Family Tennis Center on the campus of Schreiner. The Celts improved to 6-8 and will face top-seeded and 13th-ranked Trinity University in tomorrow's semifinals. Schreiner finishes the 2022 season with an 8-12 record. Friday's match had been scheduled for 9 am in the morning, but a constant mist and overcast skies pushed the start time back to 4:15 pm local time.
The result belies how close this No. 4/5 match truly was, especially in the hotly contested doubles matches. Even though St. Thomas earned the doubles sweep, every match was a nip-and-tuck affair. Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds picked up the first point for the Celts at the No. 2 line, defeating the Mountaineers' Katelyn Ruiz and Stefanie Madamba, 8-6. The No. 1 team of Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez made it 2-0 with their 8-7 (7-3) victory over Schreiner's Hannah Reyna and Victoria Morales. Moments later, Karissa Guzman and Regina Lopez made it a clean sweep with an identical 8-7 (7-3) win over Blair Drought-Villarreal and Rachel Rompel at the No. 3 line.
The tough losses at each doubles line seemed to take their toil on the Mountaineers as Reynolds cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Ruiz at No. 4 singles and the Celts' Guzman clinched the match for UST with a 6-1, 6-1 result against Rompel.
