JACOLBY MATTOX OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior sprinter on the men's track & field teams from Spring, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 22.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Jacolby stands out not only for his remarkable speed on the track but also for his active involvement in both his team and campus community.
Beyond blazing past his competition, Jacolby dedicates his time to freshman orientation, playing a key role in welcoming new students to campus and assisting them in navigating the crucial transition into their collegiate journey. Then, he serves as the treasurer in the Black Student Union, he actively contributes to showcasing the achievements of black students on campus through educational events.
Before joining UST, Jacolby was admitted to the Rising Stars Program as a first-generation college student. This program, tailored to his major in psychology, provides invaluable internships that prepare him for life after college.
As a team captain for the track and field team, Jacolby not only supports Head Coach Jarrick Wright but also fosters camaraderie among the team's extensive roster. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasizes that choosing St. Thomas has not only shaped him into the person he is today but has also provided him with a platform to be a leader and actively participate in various aspects of campus life.
