LANDON MURRAY OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a pitcher from Spring, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, March 11 through Sunday, March 17. SCAC Baseball Release - Week 6

Murray was outstanding on the mound in helping lead the Celts to an open SCAC series sweep over Texas Lutheran last weekend. In the opener, Murray went the distance tossing a complete game shutout in the Celts, 2-0 win. In nine innings of work, Murray scattered just five hits and accounted for seven strikeouts, while allowing just two walks. Through 35.2 innings of work this year, Murray has a sparkling 1.51 ERA, third best in the SCAC and now has 27 strikeouts, currently tied for fifth best in the conference.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:

Senior right-hander Brendan Beard of Texas Lutheran struck out a career-high 14 batters, one shy of the NCAA program record, over 7.1 innings in a no-decision to St. Thomas last Thursday. Senior right-hander Joseph Chavana of Trinity picked up the SCAC series-opening win against Southwestern in his only appearance last week for the 12th-ranked Tigers. Chavana threw seven strong innings to earn the win, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out seven batters in the 5-2 win for the Tigers on Friday night. Chavana improved to 3-0 this season with the win, while also striking out 23 batters over 25.1 innings, and holding an ERA of 2.13 on the year. Junior pitcher Carson Brown of Southwestern led the Pirates to a 9-2 win over 12th-ranked Trinity last Sunday, allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings of work. Brown scattered six hits and walked four to post a 1.76 WHIP and lift the Pirates to their first SCAC win of the season. Sophomore right-hander Brandon Stuber of Austin College was nearly perfect in his lone pitching appearance last week, striking out the side to move into a tie for the SCAC lead with four saves, giving up one hit and zero runs to help the ‘Roos defeat Schreiner. His four saves are the most for an Austin College player since joining the SCAC, as well as the most for a ‘Roo pitcher in the 21st century.
