LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Southwestern hosting the first conference match-up of the season against St. Thomas.
The Southwestern women swept the Celts in their season opener on Saturday, posting a 9-0 victory. The doubles duos of Ester Bowers and Emma Kesterson at No. 2 and Alli Ziehm and Tylor Despriet at No. 3 both tallied 8-1 victories. In singles, Bowers had a 7-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 slot and Nina Mitrofanova picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win playing at No. 2 singles.
The Trinity women went 2-1 over the weekend, with a 8-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Friday and a 9-0 victory over McMurry on Saturday. Senior Zoe Kaffen sealed Friday’s match, earning the No.1 singles victory on a 6-3, 7-5 mark. In Saturday’s win, the Tigers had three doubles wins with identical 8-2 scores. At the three singles line, Elodie Richard finished off the match in straight-sets. The Tiger women completed weekend play by dropping a 6-1 decision to NCAA Division II Angelo State (Texas).
Schreiner women opened the 2021 season on Friday at home, splitting matches against Dallas Baptist and Howard Payne. The Mountaineers fell to DBU but bounced back with a 9-0 victory over Howard Payne. The duo of Jennifer Garcia and Katelyn Ruiz finished with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, followed by Lindsey Reynolds and Rachel Rompel picking up an 8-1 win in the No. 2 spot. Garcia also earned a win at No. 1 singles spot with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory. The Schreiner women finished with a 1-2 weekend, falling to St. Mary’s (Texas) on Saturday.
The Austin College women’s tennis team fell in its season opener against NCAA Division II opponent Southeastern Oklahoma (8-0) on Saturday.
SCAC Women’s Tennis returns to the court this week as eight matches are scheduled over Friday and Saturday.
