SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The fourth-seeded University of St. Thomas Celts beat the Austin College Kangaroos 5-2 Friday in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championship quarterfinals at the North East ISD Tennis Center.

The Celts led 2-1 after the doubles competition. Austin College won the tightly played No. 1 doubles as Brett O’Brien and Preston Spivey beat Juanrodrigo Lopez and Jace Ware 8-7 (3).
St. Thomas won the remaining tandem matches. Race Haas and Tyler Head took the second line 8-2 over Calum Robe and Tate Nelson, while Dorian Cudina and Carson Steele won the third 8-1 over Matthew Cochran and William Dixon.
Austin College stayed in the fight by handily winning No. 6 singles. Cochran blanked Steele 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match off the court.
The Celts, however, won three singles matches to claim the victory.
Ware beat Carillo 6-3, 6-0 on the fifth line, and Lopez was a 6-1, 6-2 winner in the top singles over O’Brien. The clincher for the Celts came on the fourth line as Cudina outfought Nelson 6-1, 7-6 (5).
No. 2 singles between Haas and Preston Spivey was halted, as was the third pairing between Head and Robe.
The championship match is slated to be played Sunday at Trinity’s Butch Newman Tennis Center.

Schreiner will move on to face top-seeded Trinity University in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Austin College's Russell Tennis Center. Meanwhile, Colorado College will play in the fifth-place match tomorrow at 2 p.m., against the loser of the Texas Lutheran/Centenary match.
