SCAC Baseball Recap - Week 8

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The eighth week of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball continued this week highlighted by Southwestern sweeping No.14 Centenary and Schreiner with a victory over No.1 Trinity.

After a 6-0 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, No.1 Trinity (8-1 SCAC; 19-2 overall) went 2-1 against Schreiner, including 8-6 and 14-12 victories to open the series. Friday’s 8-6 win was paced by Brain Schauba who had a two-run homer and two-RBI double. Jack Baker put the Tigers on top in the fourth with a two-RBI knock, scoring Michael Goodrich and Jack Vonderhaar. In the 14-12 victory, four different Trinity bats collected RBI, highlighted by a two-run single by Ezra Gore which scored both Rafe Chaumette and Tyler Pettit. Reliever Branden Hance tallied his first victory of the season as he concluded Saturday's opener with a three of his five-shutout innings of relief across the day's action.

Schreiner (3-9 SCAC; 9-20 overall) finished the week with an 8-7 victory over top-ranked Trinity on Saturday. The Mountaineers started the week with a loss to Hardin-Simmons, with two loses to Trinity before the win. A home run from Aaron Recio in the top of the 10th inning gave the Mountaineers the 8-7 lead to victory.

No.14 Centenary (9-3 SCAC; 24-5 overall) started the week with a 10-8 victory over East Texas Baptist. Cole Collins, Preston Ludwick, and Brady Robinson each had two hits, and John Beaudion and Preston Ludwick each drove in three runs. The Gents’ 18-game winning streak was broken with three losses to Southwestern over the weekend.

Southwestern (9-3 SCAC; 12-12 overall) finished the week going 3-0 over No.14 Centenary. The Pirates’ Travis Harvey sat down nine of the first 10 Centenary hitters he faced and held on to earn victory in a 9-7 victory. Maxwell Mims was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored and Jake Harris was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. On Saturday, Landon Durdin delivered a two-out, two-RBI walk-off single through the right side of the infield to give Southwestern a 5-4 win. Benjamin Ludwig pitched the complete nine innings, giving up four runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season. In the series finale, the Pirates earned their second consecutive walk-off victory when Jake Harris was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Southwestern the 9-8 win.

Texas Lutheran (8-1 SCAC; 16-8 overall) went 3-1 over the week, which included taking two of three from Dallas over the weekend. After a 6-5 loss in the series opener, the Bulldog bats erupted, and the team earned the series win with 22-2 and 9-1 victories. In Saturday’s second game, the Bulldogs scored 22 runs on 17 hits, with Tyler Post leading the way with a pair of home runs. Dalton Kinder was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI and Tyler Cauley went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Joe Burch tossed a complete game, going seven innings and striking out five and allowing six hits with four walks. Sunday’s 9-1 victory was led by Cauley and Randy Huerta, who both punched out three-run home runs. Sophomore JT Taylor tossed five innings and allowed just one run to move his pitching record to 1-0.

St. Thomas (3-9 SCAC; 14-10 overall) went 2-1 against Austin College over the weekend with 11-6 and 7-3 victories. In the deciding game of the series, the Celts plated six runs in the first two innings to put the game away early. Alex Schlosser picked up the win on the mound, only allowing one hit while getting UST out of a fifth-inning jam.

Austin College (1-11 SCAC; 5-14 overall) claimed it’s first conference victory of the season, a 7-6 decision over St. Thomas on Saturday. Jake Thomas earned the win for the ‘Roos, surrendering six runs - only three earned - on 11 hits with six strikeouts. Nick Flynn finished 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, and Cody Goggins went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Dallas (4-8 SCAC; 6-15 overall) picked up on game from Texas Lutheran, a 6-5 victory over the Bulldogs in game one on Saturday. Joseph Vondrachek singled, stole second and then scored on an RBI double by designated hitter Michael Jaquez to start the game, leading the Crusaders to victory.

The ninth week of SCAC Baseball continues seeing four conference matchups, including St. Thomas traveling to Centenary, Southwestern taking on Texas Lutheran, Schreiner traveling to Austin College and Trinity hitting the road for a series against Dallas.
