Southwestern bests Centenary; Advances to Men's Lacrosse Title Game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Southwestern jumped out to a 9-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Pirates advanced to Sunday's championship match with a 28-4 victory over Centenary in the 2021 SCAC Men's Lacrosse semifinals. Official Championships Website | Postgame Interview 

The Pirates' Zac Asbury had three goals and a game-high seven assists for 10 points to lead the way and in the process became the league's career leader in both assists (105) and points (181).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tyler Johnson scored the game-opening goal just 49 seconds into the contest. 
  • Southwestern had two different goal runs of 10 unanswered; the first 10 goals of the contest and then the next 10 to extend an 11-2 lead to 21-2 midway through the third quarter.
  • The Pirates outshot Centenary, 56-9 and had 57 ground balls to the Gents' 18.
  • 14 different Southwestern players scored goals in the game, the largest number of contributors the Pirates have had in any one game this season.

NOTABLES

  • This marked the first match in SCAC tournament play between Southwestern and Centenary.
  • The 28 goals scored by Southwestern are the most by any team in SCAC tournament play. The previous mark of 24 had been set in the 2013 title game when Colorado College defeated Southwestern, 24-2.
  • With his seven assists, Zac Asbury now has a league-leading 33 on the season. SCAC's all-time leader in the category, he went over 100 career assists in the game and now has 105 for his career. His 10 points gave him 181 career points and moved him past former Pirate Jamie Long on the league's all-time points scored list. Long, who played for Southwestern from 2010-2013, had 174 points in his career.

UP NEXT

By defeating Centenary, second-seeded Southwestern (7-4) advances to the championship match where they will face top-seeded and 18th-ranked Colorado College (10-3) on Sunday at Noon MT. Of the six SCAC men's lacrosse championships that have been played, CC has won five. This will mark the fifth time the two have met for the SCAC title with the last being the most competitive, a 13-10 victory for CC at the 2019 championship.
