LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The tenth week of SCAC Baseball was highlighted by an intra-conference Top 20 matchup as No. 2 Trinity and No. 19 Centenary squared off in a three-game series.
After a 13-12 non-conference victory over Texas Lutheran, second-ranked Trinity (12-2 SCAC; 25-4 overall) took two of three from No. 19 Centenary over the weekend, finishing Saturday’s double-header with two, 9-6 wins. Michael Goodrich homered in both games and finished with a total of five RBI to lead Trinity's offense. Brandon Hance got the game one win in relief to move to 2-0 this season, while Matthew Thomas locked down his fifth save. Brian Schaub hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season in game two.
The Gents (13-5 SCAC; 29-7 overall) bounced back after Saturday’s doubleheader sweep to salvage a 14-12 victory over Trinity in game three on Sunday. Five Centenary players posted three-hit games and two others collected two each. The Gents also drew four walks, had five extra-base hits, and stole three bases. Senior Cody Crowder had a big day as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI, a walk, two runs scored, a double, and a stolen base. Gary Hewitt was also 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored.
After a non-conference loss to UMHB to open the week, Southwestern (13-5 SCAC; 18-15 overall) bounced back to win three against Austin College. In game one of Saturday’s double-header, Benjamin Ludwig tossed his third complete game of the season in the 12-2 victory. Jake Harris and Bryce Debbs each went 2-for-5 with a run scored in game two. Harris was one of three players to record two RBIs, along with Ted Lobkowicz and Daniel Montogmery Jr. In the Pirates’ 13-7 victory in game three, Debbs and Kyle Porter both homered to power the Southwestern offense and Trey Dees picked up the win, allowing one earned run over five innings.
Texas Lutheran (13-2 SCAC; 22-10 overall) swept Schreiner in a three-game series over the weekend. Saturday’s double-header produced 15-2 and 16-3 victories as Randy Huerta hit three home runs on the day – including two in game one - as the Bulldogs tallied four home runs in the first game and four more in the second. In game one, Joe Jimenez hit a three-run home run, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Sunday, ended in a two-out rally in the bottom of the 11th for the 12-9 victory.
Dallas (6-11 SCAC; 10-18 overall) swept Hardin-Simmons (4-3, 9-1) to begin the week, Tuesday, and picked up a pair of wins over St. Thomas (16-11, 15-5) over the weekend. In Sunday’s 15-5 victory, UD did its scoring early with 14 runs coming in the first three innings, headlined by a seven-run second inning. Zachary Taylor hit a three-run homer, and the Crusaders logged 13 hits while taking advantage of six errors by the Celts. The Crusaders combined for 40 runs scored in this weekend series, as they concluded a suspended game two, Sunday, with a 16-11 final.
St. Thomas (4-14 SCAC; 15-15 overall) went 1-2 over the weekend with a 10-9 win over Dallas, Saturday. John Sebok and Noah Martinez led the Celts in Saturday’s victory with their RBI base knocks in the bottom of the second. Sebok knotted things up with another RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Schreiner (6-12 SCAC; 13-24 Overall) split a pair of games against Howard Payne, Tuesday.
This weekend marks the final week of SCAC Baseball regular season play as teams jockey for seeding for the following week’s conference tournament. The top four teams will qualify for the event, scheduled for May 7-9, at The Depot at Cleburne Station in Cleburne, Texas.
