The six teams for the 2020-21 SCAC Men’s Soccer Tournament have been set following last week’s fixtures as Trinity, Southwestern, Colorado College, St. Thomas, Texas Lutheran and Centenary have all qualified for postseason action. Tournament seeding however is still very much on the line heading into the final weekend of regular season clashes.

Trinity (5-0-1, 5-0-1) defeated Colorado College (4-2-1, 4-3-1), 5-1, last Friday in the lone match of the week for the Texas Tigers. Trinity jumped on CC early as Chen Adjei scored just 32 seconds in the contest off an assist from Fraser Burns. Colorado College tied the game a 1-1 when Kiran Singh scored his fifth of the season in the 16th minute, extending his scoring streak to three games. In the 27th minute Burns and Adjei connected once again for the eventual game-winning goal, this time Burns scoring the tally off an assist from Adjei. Burns would have his hand in a third goal of the opening half, assisting on Jack Eubank’s first career goal less than three minutes later to extend the TU Tiger’s lead to 3-1 in the 30th minute. Trinity carried a 4-1 lead into the half following a Colorado College own goal in the 34th minute capping off a three-goal run in less than seven minutes for the TU Tigers after CC tied the game at 1-1. It remained a three-goal differential late into the second half before Eubank scored his second of the night in the 85th minute to deliver Trinity’s 5-1 victory. Trinity finished with a 16-11 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Southwestern (4-0-2, 4-0-2) is unbeaten through its opening six SCAC contests for just the third time in program history and the first time since 2013 following a 2-1 double overtime victory at Dallas (2-5-1, 2-5-1) last Saturday. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead into the half after Nathaniel Blake scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. It was the second goal of the season for Blake. Chase Reynolds scored his fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute to bring Dallas back even with Southwestern thanks to an assist from Nat Kajiwara. Dallas outshot Southwestern 3-2 following the Reynolds goal but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game went to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Southwestern cashed in with the golden goal just 51 seconds into the second overtime when Mofe Ariyo scored in his second-straight game to secure three critical points for the Pirates. The goal was assisted by Theo Givens. Dallas finished the game with an 11-10 edge in shots, however Southwestern outshot the Crusaders, 2-1, in overtime. Goncalo Pernas finished the game with five saves in net for Dallas, while Jack Viles was credited with two saves for Southwestern.

St. Thomas (4-2-1, 4-2-1) rang up a season-high five goals and defeated Austin College (1-5-0, 1-5-0), 5-1, at home last Saturday. Ian Alvarez scored twice in the first half, which included the eventual game-winner to give the Celts a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Austin College scored the opening goal of the second half as Cesar Escobar scored his first goal of the season but goals from Heiko Leinweber, Omar Blanco and Danny Ramirez sealed St. Thomas’ four-goal victory. The Celts fired 23 shots compared to just nine for the ‘Roos. Aaron Hoffman finished with seven saves in net for Austin College.

Texas Lutheran (4-3-0, 4-3-0) scored in the final minute to edge Colorado College, 3-2, in a rematch of the 2019 SCAC Tournament Final. Luis Green scored and delivered a career-high two assists for a total of four points to lead the Bulldogs in victory. CC opened the scoring on a goal from Miles Montgomery in the 22nd minute and took a 1-0 lead into half. The Bulldogs took the lead after a pair of goals less than six minutes apart when Nestor Ayala found the back of the net in the 55th minute and Green buried his 47th career goal in the 61st minute. Kevin Peterson equalized the game for Colorado College in the 88th minute and appeared to send the game into overtime with less than three minutes remaining. Then with 53 seconds remaining, Jared Esparza took a cross from Green and scored his second goal of the season to lift the Bulldogs to victory. CC had a slight edge in total shots, 16-14, and in shots on goal, 9-5. Caleb Weed made seven saves in goal for the Bulldogs and Keleher Felton registered two saves for the Tigers.

Centenary (3-4-1, 3-3-0) secured its spot in the SCAC Tournament following a 2-0 shutout victory over Schreiner (0-7-0, 0-7-0) last Saturday in Shreveport. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Gents. Following a scoreless firs half, Centenary got the eventual game-winning goal in the 50th minute when Diego Hernandez scored his first of the season off an assist from Jaron Petreas. Petreas then added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 77th minute to secure the victory for the Gents. Sami Borchalli made six saves in net to record his second shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.

The SCAC men’s soccer regular season wraps up this weekend with four fixtures on the schedule highlighted by Southwestern hosting St. Thomas. Following the completion of the weekend, seedings for the conference tournament will be announced.
