LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Southwestern hosting the first conference match-up of the season against St. Thomas.
The Southwestern men swept the Celts’ in its season opener, posting a 9-0 victory. The Pirates won all three double matches, highlighted by an 8-4 victory from Carlos Esteban Rodero and Drew Shuvalov at the No. 1 spot. Vesko Lekovic led the way at the No. 1 singles spot and recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Trinity went 2-1 over the weekend, with a 9-0 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Friday before splitting its two matches on Saturday. Cal Hunter secured the match-clinching point on Friday, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the fourth singles position. Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen posted a 8-1 tally in the No.1 doubles play. On Saturday, the Tigers defeated McMurry, 8-1, before dropping a 5-2 decision to NCAA Division I Abilene Christian University.
The Schreiner men opened their season on Friday at home, splitting matches against Dallas Baptist and Howard Payne. The Mountaineers fell to DBU prior to picking up a 9-0 victory over Howard Payne later in the day. Dennis Miller led the way for the Mountaineers, picking up both a singles (6-1, 6-1) and doubles (8-4) victory - with partner Mario Gallinar - in the No. 1 spots. The Mountaineers competed their 1-2 weekend on Saturady, falling to St. Mary’s by a 9-0 tally.
The Austin College men’s team fell in its season opener against NCAA Division II opponent Southeastern Oklahoma (7-0) on Saturday.
Texas Lutheran absorbed a 5-2 defeat against The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. UTRGV, a member of NCAA Division I, played with five players, resulting in two Bulldog walkover wins.
SCAC Men’s Tennis returns to the court this week as nine matchups are scheduled over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
