Women's Tennis Defeats Celts in Season Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team defeated the University of St. Thomas Celts 9-0 in their season opener.

In doubles, Nina Elez and Nina Mitrofanova won a hard-fought match, defeating Alejandra Lopez and AnaMaria Gonzalez 8-7, 7-5. "Nina and Nina battled through a very tough team and windy conditions to get a big win at number 1. They were up 6-2 then had to battle at 6-7 to force the breaker," says Head Coach Billy Porter.

Esther Bowers and Emma Kesterson bested Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds 8-1 playing at No. 2 spots, while Alli Ziehm and Taylor Despriet also won 8-1 against Karissa Guzman and Anna Ta at the No 3 spot.

In singles, Bowers defeated Gonzalez 7-6, 6-3 playing at No. 1 and Mitrofanova defeated Lopez (6-3, 6-3) playing at No. 2. Kesterson easily bested Davila 6-1, 6-2. Porter says, "Emma had amazing energy yet again and played a pretty solid match. Very pleased how she contributed towards her teammates."

Elez took a straightforward victory over Reynolds 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot, while Despriet and Chandler Vrba defeated Guzman and Callighan 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. "Chandler was good today and needed a win as she's been working extremely hard and I was happy for her to see it pay off," say's Porter.

As the Pirates take their first win of the season, women's tennis gets ready for next week's home match against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, Feb. 12th at 4:00 PM.
