CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The 16th-ranked Trinity University women's tennis team lost a hard-fought 5-2 decision to #5 Pomona-Pitzer (CA) Colleges in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday.

Pomona-Pitzer began the dual match by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles. The top tandem of Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz prevailed to give the Tigers their first point of the matchup.

Trinity lost the first two singles matches to fall behind 4-1, and the first set of all four remaining matches was also won by Pomona to get to the brink of the clincher.

Andrea DeLeon launched a rally to win the final two sets of line five, and the Tigers closed the score to 4-2.

Trinity also rallied in each of the final three singles matches to force a third set. Southwick was leading 4-2 at line one, but Caroline Kutach lost at #2 singles, and the Sagehens prevailed.

The Tigers played in their sixth straight NCAA Championship, and completed the season with a 17-8 record. Pomona-Pitzer improved to 16-7 and will advance to tomorrow's third round match.

Southwick and Lutz finished the campaign with a 7-0 mark as a doubles team, while De Leon turned in a superb 17-4 singles record this season.

Liza Southwick will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship May 25-27 at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
