LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer student-athletes earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team Thursday. (CoSIDA release)
Colorado College's Soren Frykholm earned the honor for the second consecutive year while Austin College's Phillip Le and Trinity University's Todd Whittaker were first-time honorees.
Frykholm, a senior defender from Boulder, Colo., currently has a 3.83 GPA in romance languages. On the field, he has helped a CC defense that has allowed just 10 goals through 16 games, posting a GAA of 0.61 (second in the SCAC). He was SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in Week 4 of the regular season. The Tigers have posted nine clean sheets on the season.
Le, a sophomore forward from Frisco, Texas, is the only second-year player to earn all-Academic honors in District 8. This season, Le leads the SCAC with 12 goals scored and has twice been selected as the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week. The finance and economics major has also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.59 grade-point-average to earn this award.
Whittaker, a senior goalkeeper from Goulburn, Australia, currently holds a 3.79 GPA in chemistry. He leads the SCAC in goals-against-average (0.61), allowing just nine goals in over 1327 minutes between the pipes. The SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in Week 3, Whittaker also has 38 saves and his .809 save percentage is the second-highest in the conference.
The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Frykholm, Le and Whittaker will all be eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
