Trinity Women; Southwestern Men Lead After Day One of 2017 SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships

LEWISVILLE, Texas - The Trinity University women and the Southwestern University men took the early lead on Day One action of the 2017 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Official Championships Website | Team Scores 

On the women's side, the Texas Tigers quartet of Star Rosales, Lindsay Hagmann, Paige Johnson, and Lauren Cuda took top honors in the 200 medley by touching the wall in 1:48.20. Colorado College's Sarah Dunbar, Kate Guynn, Ellen Silk and Justina Zuckerman finished just .05 seconds behind in second place. Southwestern took the third slot on the awards podium with a finish of 1:50.33.

In the 800 free relay, Hagmann, Abbie Jones, Cuda and Rebecca Andruzzi finished in a top time of 7:43.92, beating out Colorado College's Jio Chang, Dunbar, Selma Jukic, and Alma Jukic (7:47.19). Southwestern's squad of Sam Rao, Alexandra Morris, Taylor Adams and Madison Doty placed third in a time of 8:01.98.

As for team scores, the Trinity women have 110 points for an early 10-point lead over Colorado College (100 points). Southwestern is third with 90 points and Centenary is fourth with 80 points. Rounding out the team scores after Wednesday, Austin College has 60 points, McMurry has 56 and first-year SCAC competitor University of the Ozarks has 24.

In the first swim of the evening on the men's side, Southwestern's team of Michael Glover, Mickey Scharbrough, Matt Sluss and Simmon Belaineh started the championships off with a bang, setting a new SCAC meet record in the 200 medley relay with a finishing time of 1:32.21. Trinity was second in a time of 1:32.38 and Centenary was third with a finish of 1:35.37.

In the evening's final event, the 800 freestyle relay, Southwestern once again touched the wall first as the team of Matt Sluss, Michael Glover, Peter Robinson and Todd Coachman finished in a winning time of 6:53.33. Centenary came home in second with a time of 6:57.93 and Trinity was third in 6:58.89.

After two events on the men's side, Southwestern has a team score of 112 while Trinity is second with 98 points. Centenary and Colorado College follow closely in third and fourth with 88 and 82 points, respectively. Austin College is fifth with 70 points and McMurry is in sixth with 66 points. SCAC newcomer University of the Ozarks did not field a team in either of the relays and has yet to score.
