CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Trinity University's Liza Southwick and Southwestern University's Mary Cardone opened the NCAA Singles Championship Thursday, but fell short on the first day of competition.
Southwick defeated Camille Smukler of Amherst College in a match that took more than three hours to complete. Southwick fell 4-6 in the first set, but battled back to earn her own 6-4 win. The two ended up in a third-set tiebreaker to decide the winner, and Southwick came out on top.

Southwick advanced to the Round of 16, where she faced Washington University's Rebecca Ho. She wasn't able to get the win, ending her season with a 6-1, 6-2 loss.
Cardone took on Tess Trinka from Bowdoin College in her match, putting up a tough battle in the first set, but ultimately dropping the tiebreaker. She wasn't able to bounce back in the second set, however, ending her season with a 7-6, 6-0 loss.
