Four SCAC Football Players Earn D3football.com All-South Region Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference football players earned D3football.com All-Region honors Monday.

Southwestern University’s Justin Broussard and Trinity University’s Luke Packard were each named to the second team defense, while Texas Lutheran University’s Marquis Barrolle and Darian Candler earned third team honors at their positions.

Broussard, a senior defensive end from Beaumont, Texas, is a four time first-team All-SCAC player, was named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year for 2016 and earned All-Region honors for the second consecutive season. Last year, Broussard was named to the third-team defense. Broussard tallied 60 tackles, including 20.5 for loss and 15.5 sacks during the 2016 season. He finished his career with 37 sacks, which is tied for second all-time in SCAC history. Broussard also set the conference's single-game mark with 5.5 sacks against Trinity on Oct. 15.

Packard, a senior defensive end from Dallas, Texas, closed out his career with 88 tackles, including 27 for loss and 16.5 sacks. While at Trinity, Packard earned first-team All-SCAC honors three times. Packard finishes his career with 206 total tackles, 44.5 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. He also tallied three interceptions, three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. In the final game of the season, Packard became the Trinity sacks leader for both a career and single season.

Broussard and Packard were both named as nominees for the Cliff Harris Award earlier this month.

Barrolle, a senior running back from Ingleside, Texas, earned his second All-Region honor, after leading the league in rushing. Barrolle carried the ball 242 times for 1,107 yards and eight touchdowns. He capped his career at TLU with a season-high 215 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the final game. In that contest, Barrolle became the league’s all-time leading rusher as the 2014 All-American finished his career with 3,991 yards. He also posted 4,867 all-purpose career yards and 38 touchdowns (33 rushing, five receiving).

Candler, a senior linebacker from Humble, Texas, led the league with 120 tackles this season including 13 for a loss, averaging 12.0 per game. His 12.0 tackles per game were nearly three more than any other player in the league. Candler also grabbed two interceptions on the season and tallied six pass breakups. In his career, Candler recorded 289 tackles including 44 for a loss, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions.
